I think they saved a-ton-of-money by doing it 'hand held' as Rush explained their technique; eliminate the need to set up an ungainly tipod and 'frame' the shot. Instead, just DO IT - shoot the scene with a minimum of fuss, keep the action ROLLING and the actors engaged.

I think since this will be shown in schools they went for the younger audience.The kids like the fast cuts.They keep the story together-even with last minute edits-they pulled it off.
