Denmark - TATP explosives seized from accused terrorists
AFP via Babelfish translation | September 11, 2006

The explosive seized among terrorists supposed in Denmark was TATP

COPENHAGEN - the substance, seized at one of the terrorists supposed stopped in Denmark last week, is TATP (triacetone triperoxyde), a chemical explosive snuffed by the islamist ones and used in particular at the time of the attacks of London, according to a Danish newspaper

The bottle seized on September 5 in the residence of one of the supposed terrorists, at the time of a haul of the police force with Odense, contains "a clear liquid including/understanding a synthetic mixture for the manufacture of the TATP and of the crystals are composed of TATP", writes the daily newspaper B.T., which published Monday this analysis.

B.T affirms moreover that the report/ratio of analysis of this substance would have been found Saturday in the street by a walker apart from the buildings of the chemistry laboratory of the Danish Agency of management of the crises.

The laboratory is located in the university park of Copenhagen.

Neither the service of Danish information FART, at the origin of these arrests, nor the police force of Odense, wanted to comment on this information.

The director of the agency, Frederik Schydt, recognized and deplored this incident, it declared, quoted by the Danish agency Ritzau.

"All indicates that it acts of a human error. A document (confidential on the analysis in question), which was to be destroyed, was put in a paper heap thrown then in a container at waste outside ", it affirmed.

Mr. Schydt said "to be unaware of" how this document was found in the street by a passer by, noting that the analysis in question is "a preliminary analysis" of the laboratory of this substance seized at the group of supposed terrorists.

The TATP is relatively easy to manufacture for terrorists amateurs, and was used by the authors of bombings in the Middle East like in the terrorist actions of London in July 2005, points out the newspaper.

"the man with the trapped shoes" Richard Reid had also stopped him, in December 2001, possession of this artisanal explosive.

Seven men (six Danes and a foreigner), old from 18 to 33 years, are imprisoned since last Tuesday, are suspectés of terrorism.

The Danish police force in addition confiscated quantities of artificial fertiliser, gas bottles and steel glares during its searchings, according to B.T.

Snuffed is an interesting word to use in connection with Copenhagen...

Is FART an appropriate acronym for their organization?

"The Danish police force in addition confiscated quantities of artificial fertiliser, gas bottles and steel glares during its searchings, according to B.T."

Well, that evidence is purely circumstantial, the ACLU would argue. I'm sure they intended to put the fertilizer into bottles only to admire it's beauty.

The fact that there is absolutely no mention of it, means automatically that this is all P.C. code wording for "IslamoNazi".

Correct me if I am wrong.

The Danes better get FART on this.

I just read up on TATP. You'd have to be insane to manufacture this stuff it's so unstable.

...
The extreme shock, heat, and friction sensitivity are due to the instability of the molecule. Big crystals, found in older mixtures, are more dangerous, as they are easier to shatter — and initiate — than small ones.

Many people have been killed or permanently injured by accidents with acetone peroxide. It is widely used by people who want to make homemade explosives because of its low cost and ease of manufacture. They may be unaware of its extreme sensitivity; or they make it anyway because it is cheap and can be made in a refrigerator.

There is a common myth that the only "safe" acetone peroxide is the trimer, made at low temperatures: "The mixture must be kept below 10 degrees Celsius. If the crystals form at this temperature, it forms the isomer called tricycloacetone peroxide, which is relatively stable and safe to handle. If the crystals form above this temperature, the dimerric form, called dicycloacetone peroxide. This isomer is much more unstable, and could go off at the touch, making it not safe enough to be considered a practical explosive. As long as the temperature is kept below 10 degrees Celsius, then there is little to worry about." [1] In reality, the acid-catalyzed peroxidation of acetone always produces a mixture of dimeric and trimeric forms.

The trimer is the more stable form, but not much more so than the dimer. All forms of acetone peroxide are very sensitive to initiation. Organic peroxides are sensitive, dangerous explosives. The military does not use them because there are many much better alternatives. Even for people who synthesize homemade explosives, there are many far safer alternatives. Even nitroglycerin is not nearly as sensitive as acetone peroxide....

IIRC it's the same stuff that student blew himself up with outside the college football stadium a year or so back.

OK, lost me right there. Nothing's worse than getting on with a good read, only to burst out laughing (much too loudly, I might add) in the office.

Couldn't they find a different acronym for this group?

FART says they are more concerned with TATP in is gaseous state which makes it silent, but deadly.

lol

FART concurs that the amount of gas released in a TATP explosion is directly related to death by suffocation do to over-pressurization, especially when the overpressure is applied to ones head, neck or face area...
