Meet the next president: Mitt Romney
Examiner.com ^ | 9/11/06 | Bill Sammon

BOSTON - Lately it seems as if Mitt Romney — a Mormon who wants to disabuse the public of the misconception that his church condones polygamy — simply cannot catch a break.

First there was “Big Love,” a TV series about polygamy in Utah that made a major splash on HBO in March. Although the show’s creators pointed out that the official Mormon Church has banned polygamy since 1890, casual viewers don’t always make the distinction.

Then came the high-profile arrest last month of polygamist Warren Steed Jeffs, who was on the FBI’s Most Wanted List. Jeffs was the leader of the Fundamentalist Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, a moniker that is confusingly close to the Mormon church’s official name, the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints.

“It bothers me no end that the term polygamy keeps being associated with my faith,” says Romney, the governor of Massachusetts, in an interview with The Examiner. “There is nothing more awful, in my view, than the violation of the marriage covenant that one has with one’s wife.

Now you're talking!
I am watching Romney. Romney is now ahead because of his "statesman" qualities. We don't need no stinkin' politicans. Whoever gets it needs Newt to be the Bull Dog (VP like Cheney). Who will have Newt's loyalty?

But Romney said Thursday that his legal advisors reviewed the matter after his idea came under attack from lawmakers and pro-abortion groups. He said is legal counsel told him the new law supersedes the old one.
Up till now, I've been looking somewhat favorably at Romney, but I'm looking for a leader on life issues, not someone who hides behind the law. At this point, I have no reason to trust Romney to nominate SC justices who will treat life issues as the matters of justice that they are.

We barely have television.

Then no Cindy and no John McCain. I'm sure you're disappointed. But that's the way it works.

I think most Mormons see politics as too dirty and contentous a game to interest them, so you wind up with Reid, Hatch, etc.

this is refreshing after 5 years of a mislabeled war on "terrorism":

The social right as of now doesn't have a varsity player and it's later in the game then folks want to admit.

You're right. But posting that here is like going to DU and posting that Dennis Kucinich can never be elected President. ;)

More conservative than Guiliani or McCain.

Please do not insult the Honorable Mr Giuliani by comparing him to that contemptible swine.

It's a good thing Jeb is not running because he has a group here who hate him. Claim that he's a murderer because he did not save Terri Shiavo.

This is the very point I am trying to make to you: every possible candidate is torn to shreds here and this is before ANY of them have officially declared their candidacies.

HA Perfect...Some of the names they throw out like Frist,Allen or Brownback have as much chance of beating the dim hate machine as Custers Bugler.

Newt better lose about 50 pounds and come up with a explanation why he served his wife with divorce papers while she was in the hospital for cancer. Newt is a brilliant man, but is lacking in morality. Way to much baggage to be president.

Do you honestly think that Hillary Clinton can talk to Newt about his baggage? The way she sold Kathleen Wiley, Juanita Broderick, et al down the river, she can say nothing about Newts insensitivity toward women. Newt is the only one who can beat her in a debate, has the clarity of thinking, the policy experience and the organization to beat that criminal phoney. Mitt Romney will not be running for Pres.

As far as the weight comment, I'll ignore it. Hillary will look small and insignificant in comparison.

I think your jumping the gun a bit. You have Hillary taking on Newt for the 08 Presidency. Newt's opponents for the Republican nomination will rip his private life apart. Brace yourself for it, it's coming.

Newt is working on marriage 3 or 4(not good when your trying to get the Christian conservative vote)In addition he has the personality of a pit bull.

These are all negatives that Republicans will exploit not democrats.

The comment on his weight was not meant to be flippant. Image is everything. His "look" will not play well to the electorate. Newt has it over Mitt (by a small margin) when it comes to speaking skills. However, put Newt next to Mitt and Mitt wins that battle hands down. Mitt will hold his own in any debate against Newt, McCain or Giuliani.

In the image department he wins against them all hands down.

Mitt will run and he has a good shot at winning.

Sorry, Semus. You say I've jumping the boat. I'm telling you the ship has sailed. Mitt will not be the candidate for President. I dont need to go through all the reasons why. It's too tedious. The Democrats are praying that Mitt is the candidate. He is totally beatable. And I like Mitt- I used to live in Mass.- but he's not going to be president. Newt is the only one who can take on Clinton. As far as his extramarital issues, they are Newt-ralized thanks to Hillary Clintons ridiculous baggage. As far as image. We're at war. If anyone doesnt vote for Newt because he's "overweight" (like Bill Clinton, perhaps?) they would be gays and women. Votes Newt doesn't have in the first place. In terms of the continuum on looks, Hillary Clinton is in the same ballpark as Newt in terms of personal flaws. I can't imagine at this time in our history having 50 lbs being an issue. You think like a woman. I suspect your vote will go to Hillary because she has the better stylist? Republicans are not this stupid. Only Democrats are.

People change, OK?

I'll wait for the primaries to see what Romney has to offer. But if he's the nominee he'll get my vote.

Romney would be more competitive in the Blue North: Michigan, Wisconsin, Minnesota, Pennyslyvania, New Jersey, Connecticut, Maine, New Hampshire. However, at the same time, he would be weaker in West Virginia, Arkansas, Tennessee, Louisiana.

....doing well in the Republican primaries unless no well funded and articulate conservative runs. Giuliani has said that he would wait to see the results of the November Congressional elections to determine if he will run for the White House.

Excellent point. If we lose the House Repub voters will be looking for a sure thing in 08...Rudy...Romney...McCaine...
if we hold the House it will embolden the establishment wing.

"On a personal basis, I don't favor abortion," he said. However, as governor of the commonwealth, I will protect a woman's right to choose"

March 25, 2005
PPLM spokesperson Erin Rowland said "We are very concerned about the direction that he's heading in, the change in style and rhetoric around a whole host of issues -- abortion is one of those, of course"

March 25, 2005
Romney spokesperson Eric Fehrnstrom said "He is in favor of the ban on partial-birth abortion."

May 31, 2005
Romney vetoes stem cell research bill

July 25, 2005
Romney vetoes Emergency Contraception bill

JohnnyZ, he may not be 100% Pro-Life, but he isn't (or at least since 1994) a Pro-Abort RINO. In fact, here in New England, he is ironically considered a "Social Conservative" (I know pathetic) And like it or not, he does reflect the Abortion position of a plularity of Americans. (Assuming Pro-Death is 20-25%, Pro-Life is 25-35%, and Somewhere in the middle is 40-45%). It makes him a strong candidate.
