A PUBLIC memorial service for Crocodile Hunter Steve Irwin is expected to be held next week at Brisbane's Suncorp Stadium.

Irwin, 44, died last Monday after he was pierced in the chest by a stingray's barb while filming a documentary off the far north Queensland coast.

A private funeral service was held for him at Australia Zoo on Saturday, his father Bob Irwin said today.

His best mate and Australia Zoo staff member Wes Mannion said today a memorial service would be held next Tuesday or Wednesday, with Suncorp Stadium a likely venue.

Mr Irwin died last Monday aged 44 after he was pierced in the chest by a stingray's barb while filming a documentary off the far north Queensland coast.

Mr Mannion said few details had been worked out about the memorial service but he hoped it would be fun.

“It's got to be exciting and fun because that's the sort of man he was – he went at 100mph,” he said.

Mr Mannion, whom Irwin once saved from a croc attack at Australia Zoo, said there would be no replacing the original Crocodile Hunter.

I respect the wishes of the family ... however I also wish that his loved ones would have allowed him the honor of a state funeral. He was impressive and did much for Australia.

We'll miss him a lot!

That's the liberal line of poop. . .Irwin was a PRO. . .he did not "play" with animals. . he was the consumate professional and was not irresponsible, as you suggest, in the least.

His death was an ACCIDENT. . .even a FREAK accident. . .When someone dies in a car wreck. . do you say. . "well, 50,000 people a year die in America in car wrecks. . what do you expect??"

Irwin Mourned at Low-Key Funeral

Crocodile Hunter star Steve Irwin's funeral has taken place in Queensland, Australia, according to local media reports. The low-key private ceremony attended by family and friends went ahead in Caloundra. Irwin will be buried at Australia Zoo, owned by his family. A source tells Australia's Sunday Mail newspaper, "The service was a service for family and good friends, people who were close to Steve in recent years. The council gave the family permission to bury Steve at the zoo and we think they're going to erect a monument there so visitors can continue to pay their respects." Internationally acclaimed conservationist Irwin died last Monday after being stung in the chest by a stingray while diving on the Great Barrier Reef. The news of his tragic death shocked the world and sparked a huge outpouring of grief, particularly in his homeland Australia. The country's Prime Minister John Howard had offered a state funeral for Irwin, but his father Bob Irwin insisted his son would have wanted a simple farewell.
