A group of top classical musicians has warned of the threat to artistic life from a hand baggage ban introduced after police foiled an alleged bomb plot against transatlantic airliners.
Many performers refuse to let their instruments, often centuries old and extremely valuable, out of their sight when they travel on planes in case they are damaged in the hold.

Who cares?
What is the oboist's revenge?
The violins have to tune to his "A".
*snickersnickersnicker*
Know what the difference is between a banjo and an Uzi?
An Uzi only repeats 32 times.
Actually I will be headed to play the Homecoming gig with my college marching band. I'm kind of hoping the airline really will lose my starter flute. Even though there is sentimental value there, I could use a new one ;-).
What's the best thing about playing Bluegrass banjo?
You only have to learn one tune.
What do you call a group of topless female accordion players?
Ladies in Pain.
All I know about it is that there IS one there, and that it's pretty impressive. I think my teacher played there a time or two.
I would love to live within range of a carillon! It'd be so nice to hear that every day.
BWHAHAHAHAHA. Good one. That's right up there with the line about Puccini writing the same opera over and over again.
I'm still very much a student - but yes, it is a hoot! It's built like a piano and plays very similarly, except your hands take the treble and your feet handle the bass.
It's a very physical instrument, and playing it makes people feel good. I think it has something to do with the vibrations or the harmonics or something, but it has a definite noticeable effect on players.

What brand and model is it? Flutes are a glut on the market on eBay. I saw a decent open-hole Selmer go for $50 the other day. You can't sell a flute on eBay these days. All the nasty Chinese imports are taking up all the space, and nobody's wading through the listings at all. Do a search on misspellings of makers' names. This was was listed as a "Selmar." Since nobody's looking through the listings, they aren't seeing these bargains.
Me, I'm searching for a "Powel" or a "Hanes" flute that way. I just gave my old one to my wife's niece who needed something better than the crummy Bundy she had.
A savings bond eventually matures and earns money.
OK, who is she, please?
The picture does not do this carillon justice. You can see AND hear it for a radius of at least 10 miles around.
FedEx is still a plane ride, but at least it's got a tracking number, etc. I would trust them with a medium-quality instrument, but not a million-dollar one.
Many musicians would rather rent instruments when they get to the gig than try to get their $10,000+ baggage there through the public transportation system. It's tough that not all instruments sound the same, not even Strats, so if the sound is going to make the trip, the instrument must also.
A Hanes flute - that's pretty funny. Actually when I was in college marching band, we would celebrate Halloween by dressing up with costumes. My squad dressed up as the Fruit of the Loom guys. I was the "green grapes" ;-). We won the Best Squad Costume prize that day!
What's the diffeence between a soprano and a Porsche?
Most musicians have never been inside a Porsche.
Consonant harmony - Mozart effect in play here, I'd imagine, as well.
My sister is the real flute pro, BTW. I think she owns both a Powell and a Haynes.
