September 10, 2006 -- AT one time, the notion of "Senator Al Franken" would have seemed as off-the-wall as "Secretary of Defense Stuart Smalley." But lately, the notion of the Harvard-educated humorist and best-selling author taking a seat in Congress has no one laughing. A new film opening Wednesday by acclaimed documentary filmmakers Chris Hegedus and Nick Doob, "Al Franken: God Spoke," follows the political exploits of the former "Saturday Night Live" performer and current Air America radio host.

The smug pygmy speaks. About the only funny thing he said in this interview is "I have disgruntled Republicans coming to me who now have a place to hear the other side." I wonder who the two are.

Things haven't changed.

Sen. Al Franken makes about as much sense as Senator John Kerry actually.

Neither has any business being in the Capitol for anything more than the 10 cent tour any other citizen gets.

Either onbe of them on the Senate floor is like a dog left a present there for someone to step in.

When a person gets really MAD, he ceases being funny.

And that guy stopped being funny A LONG TIME AGO.

I don't understand the title of Al Franken's new film.

I mean, "Al Franken: God Spoke" --I don't get it....

It doesn't contain the word, "Rush Limbaugh".

If Al Franken wants his film to sell, he should title it something like, "This film is not about Rush Limbaugh"

Or how about, "Al Franken: God spoke, 'Rush Limbaugh!' " ?

That's good!

[Q: What are some of the factors in this decision?

A: Can I win? Would I be the best candidate? My family. Serving in the Senate is tremendously demanding on your time. It's a great job but maybe not a great life. Then there's also, can I do more good continuing to do Air America?]

Actually, I think that whether or not to continue AirAmerica is firmly in the nonfactor category. More people prefer listening to the static between the stations than his show.

[Q: If you win, is the comedian side of you pretty much gone?]

The question implies that his comedian side is here, now.

[Q: When you look at the punditry landscape - to simplify it, we have you, Michael Moore and Janeane Garofalo on one side, and O'Reilly, Sean Hannity and Ann Coulter on the other ...

A:I hate being compared to those people. I see this all the time: "There's Rush Limbaugh on the right, and Al Franken on the left." I'm not a mirror image of the guy, I'm the opposite. He doesn't care about the truth whatsoever.]

I wonder what color the sky is on Al Franken's home planet.

[Q: Predictions - who will be the presidential nominees in 2008?

A: I can speculate like anyone. If Hillary decides to run, she'll be a certain kind of frontrunner. And McCain - you wonder if the Republicans will be smart enough to nominate him.]

I was just about to question whether the Democrats would be stu--- I mean smart enough to run Hillary. Oh yeah, sure Al. We'll get right on your helpful suggestion to nominate McCain.

[Will Gore run? I don't think he will. But that's something I'd like to see. Wesley Clark got much better as a candidate. Is Kerry gonna run? John Edwards is someone many people think of as a likely nominee.]

Is this Al Franken's presidential WISH LIST?! I used to think Al Franken was best described as the unlikely combination of abrasively obnoxious and tediously boring, but now I need to consider adding "just plain stupid". Or maybe he's just fallen off the wagon yet again and his return to booze and drugs is killing off what's left of his brain cells.

This goes to show how nearly anyone can practice satire at least as well as "The Master" Al Franken, and on his own terms.
