What are Clarke's military credentials? Two tanks and some machine guns might have little value in a suprise night attack. I'd go with the Northern Alliance experience over his micro management. The Northern Alliance had tanks and machine guns too. They also had night defensive responsibilities and were well aware of the limitations of those weapons in the darkness.
