To Hold Senate, G.O.P. Bolsters Its Most Liberal
New York Times ^ | 10 Sep 2006 | Adam Nagourney

With a barrage of television advertisements and the mobilization of its get-out-the-vote machine, the national Republican Party has lined up in Rhode Island to beat back a conservative primary challenge to the most liberal Republican in the Senate, Lincoln Chafee. The outcome on Tuesday could help determine whether Democrats have a shot at taking back the Senate.

In an extraordinary pre-emptive announcement, the National Republican Senatorial Committee has said it will concede Rhode Island to the Democrats should Stephen Laffey, the mayor of Cranston, defeat Mr. Chafee in the primary.

Article is very revealing about the unprincipled strategy and tactics of the NRSC.

Recommend that FReepers contibute instead to the Club for Growth.

The Repubs are getting real disgusting.

Look at the way they have treated Diana Irey in PA.

Maybe it's time to quit worrying about politics and spend time getting ready for the Second American Revolution.

This is the second lap for this thread (at least) but I don't mind since it bears repeating.

I guess it's FR's way of letting you folks in California feel like you are really on the cutting edge instead of being three hours behind. (Sorry J. Rob. You probably get up at 3 to see what we're up to. LOL)

I don't care WHAT letter is after their name. Folks like Chafee should be OUT of the Senate. Replace him Pol Pot. It would make NO DIFFERENCE and the GOP base MIGHT return to obedience.

IMHO, the Republican "base" would not approve of this tactic.

I'm sure the corporate suits will continue donating their millions to Republican causes, but I can't imagine the average Republicans out there are going to waste their money by giving it to the new "compassionate" Republican Party (compassionate for liberal incumbents, that is).

Bush and Rove are calling the shots on this. Make no mistake about it. Just like when spending bill after spending bill is signed into law. Just like when illegal immigration isn't tackled head on. It's all so sickening to watch.

Let me explain this one more time, very slowly:
1. Chafee has an R after his name
2. No true conservative is going to get elected in Rhode Island. Not for senator, not for dogcatcher. Period.
3. If there are more R's than D's after the election, Republicans get committee chairs, set the agenda, and control the debate.
4. If there are more D's than R's, vice versa.
5. If you all want to lose your right to own a gun, see the military gutted, surrender to the islamofascists, see Christianity criminalized, etc., etc., etc., just stay on your high horses and let the D's take over.
6. Yes the Repub's suck on a lot of stuff, but you ain't seen a fraction of suck until you let Clinton, Kennedy, Schumer, et al take over congress.
7. I doesn't matter how sorry Chaffee is as long as he will pretend to be an R. He's too dumb to do any real harm.
8. And to repeat 2., you ain't gonna get a conservative out of Rhode Island. Go elect one somewhere else.
Did everybody follow that, or do I need to make it simpler?

I say screw the Senate. Demorats can do no worse than the Senate immigration bill. Thank God for the House.

Support any patriotic Senator like Sessions, but the hell with any Senator like McCain who will sell out the country. Stay home, what difference will it make?

This is a much tougher call on the House side. Support pro-American candidates in the primary, but if a sell-out wins, you may have to vote for his sorry arse anyway if it means keeping a Repub. majority in the house. Maybe we can at least prevent an immigration sell out, if not get a real law enforcement mandate. Even if nothing is done on this immigration disaster, that beats the hell out of throwing open the doors. That just makes the doors harder to close.

"National Republican Senatorial Committee has said it will concede Rhode Island to the Democrats should Stephen Laffey, the mayor of Cranston, defeat Mr. Chafee"

Oh great GOP...throw your candidate under the truck so to speak. I hope Laffey wins and then wins again in November. Support your REAL conservatives...not the fake wimp CHaffee.

I've disagreed with the RSCC's method, but understood their support for the incumbent.

But after the primary, we are supposed to jump behind the winner. Why would the RSCC not follow that basic rule?

That's fine until the primary. But if Laffey wins the primary, what good does it do to have the RSCC give up? Why not try to get the "R" elected over the "D"?

They wasted all their money in the primary, that's why. It's probably better for Laffey for the RSCC to go away, they would have no credibility after their shameful attack ads.

If it wasn't for judges, I'd be with you.

We CANNOT lose the senate. If Stevens or Kennedy retire, we need a majority to get a nominee worthy of the position into the Supreme Court.

That is a one-issue election point, but that one issue is so important it SHOULD be above all else. At this point in time, we need to stem the tide of judicial activism, or it won't matter who owns the senate, the judges will be our gods.

I would love to see Laffey win the seat, but it will not happen. The RSCC could spend every dollar they have supporting him and it still will not happen. If he wins the primary, better to use limited resources to help conservatives who can win. And by the same logic, better to hold your nose and support Chaffee in the primary to get that R.

Function of the RSCC is to get the largest possible R margin in the senate, not to do grassroots education on conservative philosophy. Lot's of others, including us, have got to do that so that someday a conservative can be elected from Rhode Island.

It seems that Republican voters in RI are trying to send a message, but the Senate isn't getting the message. Typical snotty moderate behavior - we demand that you support our candidate, but the heck with you if your guy wins. Why not try to win this thing? Maybe RI is changing.

Because it can be independently verified perhaps? Call Senator Dole's office. Call any member of the Senatorial committee. Confirm the quotation. They might try to spin it, but in the end they'll confirm the quote is accurate.

Have you been paying any attention to the attack ads made against Laffey by Dole's committee? Guess not. This is perfectly in line with their actions recently.
