Normally, I would agree with the pragmatic approach. But I ask you: Who would you rather the RNC and RSCC save -- Chafee or, say, Santorum?

Only if you take all your data from Democrat Talking Points. The fact of the matter is the Democrats have almost NO chance of taking back the Seate. They have to hit 100% and the Republicans ZERO for that to happen. This is more "We cannot win the Party at the Conventions so we will control who the canidates are" Rockefeller Republican Establishment thinking. If they lose a chamber, it will be because of this "Me Too Democrat Lite" posuturing by the RINOS. Rove showed you how to win. YOU do NOT try to suck up to the Left. You would have to have the morals and principles of a Democrat to vote for Chaffeee. If all you can think of is winning, no matter if the "victory" supports democratic causes, you are no conservative. Sometimes you have to support a candidate who you do not agree with on every issue, but to support evil, someone who is against every conservative value like Chaffee, is to surrender to evil itself for the sake of a "victory".

If the Senate is divided 50-50 and control comes down to the RI seat, Chafee will opt to caucus with the Dems and put the RATs in control of the Senate.
