Boulder County officials spent at least $29,726 in costs related to the arrest, extradition and court appearance of John Mark Karr, the former suspect in the death of JonBenet Ramsey.
The Boulder District Attorney's office said it spent $23,656 investigating Karr. That included nearly $6,000 for business class tickets to fly him and an investigator to California from Bangkok, Thailand, where Karr was arrested.
The sheriff's office said it incurred $6,070 in costs, including $3,255 for Karr's flight on a state plane from Los Angeles to Jefferson County Airport in Colorado, sheriff's officials said Friday.
Overtime wages of $2,468 and supplies of $347 also were spent following an influx of reporters at the jail after Karr's extradition, sheriff's officials said.
A final accounting of overtime costs will be completed for in early October, according to the county.
Karr was cleared last week in the 1996 murder of 6-year-old JonBenet after his DNA did not match evidence from the crime scene. Karr was still in jail Friday in Boulder awaiting extradition to California to face child porn charges in Sonoma County. Authorities have until Wednesday to transfer him.
> You forgot Rita Cosby and her trip to downtown Hamilton, AL. She was broadcsting live and the temps must have been 95 degrees with humidity almost the same. <
I pity poor Rita -- given her miserable croaking voice and her dreadful show. I can't stand to watch more than about five seconds of the thing, and that's with the mute button fully engaged!
So honestly, I didn't know she had covered the Karr-fest.
In any case, given that virtually nobody watches Rita's pathetic performances, I'll proffer the thought that we probably shouldn't bill her for her very minor role in this excruciating fiasco -- which in retrospect has probably been TV news' worst collective performance of the 21st century to date.
Somewhere ... there is a village missing a not-so-lovely meter maid.
The should have called me...could have gotten them some free champagne as product placement on that plane.
Don't forget Rita"Polly Purebred"Crosby chasing him around like a lovesick groupie.
That is nothing. What is the total cost of the whole investigation for the last 10 years. They payed more than that for private investigators.
if I confess to the Lindbergh baby kidnapping, do I get prawns and champagne?
Yeah really, haven't they ever seen Snakes on a Plane??
I watch Lears and Citations flying in regularly to my local airport where a felon is disgorged in cuffs and taken off to the local Federal Pen.
