'PATH' MISSED REAL 9/11 STORY
September 8, 2006 -- FIRST things first: ABC's miniseries "The Path to 9/11," which will air Sept. 10 and 11, is a stiff. For those well-versed in the infuriating details of the missteps and missed opportunities in pursing al Qaeda between the first bombing of the World Trade Center in 1993 and the attack five years ago, there is nothing new here.

Of course, the question obsessing everyone today is: Does the movie misrepresent events, conversations and policies of the Clinton administration?
Yes and no.
Ex-Secretary of State Madeleine Albright's anger is unquestionably justified. The version that I saw has her self-righteously owning up to actions that effectively tipped off Osama bin Laden to a strike against his Afghan training camp. "We had to inform the Pakistanis," the movie's Albright insists.
The real Albright says she neither did nor said such a thing and that the meeting we see in the movie never took place. The 9/11 Commission report, on which the film is partly based, says it was a senior military official who told the Pakistanis.

Samuel Berger, Clinton's national security adviser, also seems to have just cause for complaint. The version of the film I saw portrays him as having ruined the CIA's one clear shot at bin Laden himself.
"Do we have clearance" to shoot, the CIA asks Berger, with Osama in their sights, and Berger responds, "I don't have that authority." That scene never took place in real life. The imputation that an actual living person named Sandy Berger refused to give a specific OK to an operation that would have put an end to Osama bin Laden three years before 9/11 is a libel.

Cripes, Pod, how much more clearly did al Qaeda have to paint the picture for Bill Clinton to take them seriously? But nooo, he instead directed his command at the Serb/Albanian conflict in Kosovo.

I give ABC kudos for this, presuming the film airs as planned. Lefties own Hollywood. For anything other than leftie swill to get made there is a monumental step forward IMO.

The attack was so diabolical that I cannot fault anyone but the Islamofascists, when all is said and done. Who could imagine such an attack? If there is one moment that could have changed things, I guess it was when access to the computer of one of the 9-11 related Islamofascists was denied (I forget the exact details) - or when all those ratbags taking flying lessons had been noticed.
Another VERY telling moment was the Clinton admin. reaction to the bombing of the Cole, which is a symbol of all of the PC crap that led to 9-11.
What I'm hearing from liberals is the usual. They blindly believe Halfbright, Burgler and other administration officials but call others liars.
If the first WTC bombing in 1993 had been successful and the two towers had toppled into each other and then into the street, there could easily have been more deaths in a few minutes than we suffered during the whole Vietnam War. That was the intention of the bombers and it was not merely a crime - it was an overt act of war. Talk about not connecting the dots ...
Just read this morning that ABC is "tweaking" the version of events to appease Clinton administration officials - you know in much the same way that the press changes their articles so as not to spread inaccuracies and mis-representation of President Bush and the Republicans.
The thing that's really sad is that many people who watch it will think it's absolutely 100% true in every detail. Clinton and his cronies would not be so freaked out if they didn't have plenty to hide, and ABC will make whatever changes it takes to please the left.
Pull the miniseries and produce a real documentary who's accuracy is at least defensible. Now if someone produces a historically-accurate version people will tune it out.
Is this a matter of "who was" was?
On pages 182 and 183 of Losing Bin Laden by Richard Miniter, it says Clinton's plan had Joint Chiefs of Staff Vice-Chairman Joe Ralston in Pakistan to notify the Pakis when the cruise missiles approached Paki airspace.
Mad Maddie may have not told the Pakis directly, but she was most likely involved in the "plan".
