In Australia in contrast, such things would be deemed unconstitutional - it needs referendum by the people in additional to parliamentary approval as well.

Australia has a single "rigid" Constitution. Canada's Constitution consists of 14 different documents and until recently, the only body that could amend the nation's supreme law was the British Parliament!
