Student Newspaper Lampoons Mother of God
TFP Student Action ^ | 09-08-06 | TFP

If someone attacked your mother, would you be upset? Would you protest? I’m sure you would.

Well, the Mother of God is grossly insulted by the University of Virginia’s student newspaper, The Cavalier Daily, which printed a Nativity-like cartoon of Our Lady holding the Infant Jesus beside Saint Joseph on August 24.

The figure depicting Saint Joseph says: "Mary…I don't mean to ruin this special moment, but how did you get that bumpy rash?” suggesting a sexually transmitted disease. To which a Mary-figure says, “I swear, it was Immaculately Transmitted.”

This is outrageous public blasphemy! Click here to protest now.

Actually, Lutherans and Catholics generally agree about Mary. For that matter, ALL of the preminent Reformers accepted traditional Marian beliefs (but try to get the modern anti-Catholics to understand that).

[ If you are correct, then the Transfiguration, the Passion, His death, and His Resurrection were pointless. But you're dead wrong. His Body is more than a "prop." You're not just a docetist. You're a gnostic. ]

No they were not pointless, they made their point.. You have no idea of who/what I am.. I would be careful if I were you.. Humility is a rare thing these days..

Heresy is a product of dogma.

How is it you can believe stuff and interject on a thread like this to tell others they need to "re-think" things, and yet you remain free of the taint of "dogma"?

I was a human on my first birth, but after being born again I AM A NEW CREATURE..

Now you deny your own humanity?

Another fine argument for the notion that all people should read Scripture and reach their own conclusions free of any influence by tradition or history.

The Spirit of Jesus(the Christ) is eternal his body was just a prop, much like yours is.. for YOU are a spirit too.. You're body will die and you will get another one.. just as Jesus did..

Again, you have just stated heresy. You do not know the Scriptures. Please read Luke 24:36-40 and John 20:20, 27, for starters.

The body Jesus rose with (and ascended into heaven with) is the same body--now glorified, to be sure--that was crucified. The risen Lord bears in his hands, feet, and side the marks of his crucifixion.

Christians believe in the resurrection of the body, i.e., the flesh.

No we're catechising for the benefit of others. A lurking Catholic or Lutheran will learn what his position and language should be, and why.

Are you saying this is for the benefit of people who belong to the same church as the poster, but aren't as well-versed in the dogma as they should be? That's an interesting angle I hadn't thought of.

The first chapter of the Gospel of John makes it absolutely clear that God became flesh, He never ceased to be human, His Body was Resurrected and His Body Assended into Heaven.

It isn't about me being better than you. Heck, I am as much (possibly even more) of a sinner as you are. It's about performing a work of mercy for you. I'm pointing out your error, so you can correct it.

That's exactly what I am saying. I have learned volumes online by watching other apologists. Now I do my part to pass on what I have learned.

That's part of how the Church passes on its Faith, especially when official channels are not up to the task.

[ If He was not one of us, how can He redeem us? ]

How can God redeem us?... You err in not knowing the power of God.. He redeems us through faith (our faith).. which buys a lot in the economy of God.. People can have faith in a lot of things.. Faith is the key to "the kingdom".. What you have faith in is question.. The right key will open the gate(s) the wrong key will not..

How do you get That key, the right key?.. I would say through prayer.. Some have many keys on their key chain.. Knew a handy man once that had many keys on a key chain.. all the right ones for various locks.. But THIS key can be only obtained through prayer, I believe..

Who knows.... this post could be a challenge to you to seek another key..

It is the belief of orthodox Christianity that God became man in order to uplift humanity. Hence my question.

Sin creates a gap between man and God that only God can traverse. He does this by reaching out to, and assuming human nature in His own person, the person Jesus Christ. This person is truly man and truly God. By becoming our humanity on the cross, Jesus is able to make the infinite reperation, the ultimate sacrifice needed to repair the rift between humanity and God.

It matters very much if Jesus is not truly man and truly God. If God takes on a cloak, an appearance of humanity, but never truly becomes one of us, then His sacrifice does not benefit us.

Some christians do, others do not.. Not all christians are christians.. You can put puppies in an oven but that don't make them muffins..

When you look into the mirror to shave you are looking at your body but your spirit is looking back at you.. That body will be changed in the twinkling of the eye.. Changed into what?.. A NEW body?... A different body?..
