The overnight Nielsen Ratings are in, and they are a disaster for Katie Couric.
Couric's CBS Evening News was beaten by ABC WNT in New York, Chicago and other major markets
After all the hype, CBS and the other networks had expected a "honeymoon" lasting for at least a month as viewers sampled Couric's new show. It lasted one night.
Although she eeked out a national ratings win, the big cities have already abandoned her.
In places such as New York, Chicago and Philadelphia, where the big advertising dollars are spent, last night's CBS/Couric ratings free-fall mean one thing; Viewers sampled her Wednesday night, and didnt like what they saw.
The huge ratings drop would have been understandable had there been a major breaking story, and viewers would have been expected to go to Gibson or Williams for Cronkiteian experience and gravitas. But it was a slow news night, a perfect time for Couric's "perky charm" to radiate and attract viewers, but both she and the ratings fell flat.
Bottom line, $15 million a year and months of super-hype.... all for nothing.
Old contacts at CBS I spoke with this AM said everyone is making lunch reservation to eat/drink together.... but at restaurants far from Black Rock or West 57th. Everyone wants a "tribal think" to decide who (other than themselves) is to blame for this disaster, but they are eating in out of the way places in Greenwich Village or the East Side, so they wont be seen together.
There will be much more of this over the weekend.
I never realized how AWFUL her VOICE is!!! YIKES!!
One idea for a Katie sign-off. She is sitting facing the lights in the white blazer she wore the first night. I think (someone help me here) she might have been asking for help with the sign-off. The camera goes behind her and you she that she throws open her blazer and bares herself. It was very dramatic. And very funny.
Perky and news don't mix.
I agree that Katie does have an awful voice. I think that she's attractive though. I don't understand why people have said the things they have about her face.
I got my wife to tape the show, so I could watch Rush's segment. I got home, watched Rush, then cued it up to the start of his segment again.
My wife got home later, and I played Rush for her. She kept watching, because she wanted to see Katie, then the conversation went something like this:
Wife: Where's Katie?
Me: That's Katie.
Wife: It doesn't look like Katie.
Me: It's Katie.
Wife: She's not perky, and her hair isn't right.
Me: It's Katie.
Wife: I'll believe it's Katie, when they say she's Katie.
Later, at Katie's sign off, when she refers to herself by name:
Me: See, she just said she was Katie.
Wife: Well, she finally looked and sounded like the real Katie Couric, just then.
:-)
CBS is to broadcast journalism what GM is to cars, IMHO.
She can even say the same thing Jane Curtain did on SNL after she ripped open her blouse and exposed her bra;
"Try these on for size, Connie Chung! If it's raw news you want, it's raw news you get!"
Even a couple of my ultra-liberal "friends" thought she was painful to watch. That's when you know it's bad.
When will SeeBS's suits learn to look at the "sell by" date on former NBC newspeople? Katie is going to be the same kind of disaster that Bryant GumbleGumball Grumble was. If I was a SeeBS stockholder, I would have sold off as soon as they announced Katie as the new anchor because they are NOT going to get the return on their investment on that deal. Management will have to buy out her contract within 18 mos. just like they did with Gumball. If SeeBS iust wants to throw money away, they can throw some at me. 8^)
I missed it, but my husband said it was the funniest thing ever.
Ping your lists.
Time for your deck chair gif.
Fire your editor. < |:)~
Still counting down to April, 2007.
Closing the coffin lid on tha whirld newz tanite. Hey MSM - the wheel has turned and your time is over.
Could it be that the MORE LIBERAL markets like NY-Chicago etc, tuned out BECAUSE Rush was going to appear? We all know they had plenty of warning with RUSH touting his appearance on his radio show yesterday.
Guess we will have to wait until Monday to see if her numbers increase or decrease.
WCCO in Minneapolis is owned by the CBS corporation.
It's pretty much a direct party line: Democrats-> CBS-> WCCO.
Couric sinking faster than a rock or the Titanic.
maineman's trainwreck imagery seems to capture it better IMHO. LOL.
