Sheriff: Radio Host's Wife Killed In Professional Hit

METAIRIE, La. -- A popular radio talk-show host was arrested Thursday and charged with killing his estranged wife, shooting her twice in the face, Jefferson Parish Sheriff Harry Lee said.

Lee said Vince Marinello, 69, surrendered to authorities and was booked into the Jefferson Parish jail in Gretna on second-degree murder charges.

Marinello's wife, Mary Elizabeth Marinello, 45, was shot in the face on Aug. 31 in the parking lot of a building in the affluent Old Metairie neighborhood. She died the next day.

Authorities said they initially thought the shooting was an armed robbery gone bad. But Lee said examination of a security surveillance videotape convinced investigators that Mary Elizabeth Marinello was the victim of a planned attack.

Mary Elizabeth Marinello and her husband were going through a divorce.

Deputies had searched Vince Marinello's storm-damaged, boarded-up house, his Federal Emergency Management Agency trailer, and the house next door, belonging to a friend of his, as part of the investigation.

Well actually, maybe I am surprised.

If you shoot your wife in the face, is that second degree murder?

69 and 45? A trophy wife who he'd finally grown tired of?

Since when is a planned hit   NOT premeditated??

It seems that a divorce or, in the case of this bigamous marriage, annullment would have been much easier, cleaner and cheaper.

Yup, if I'd killed her when I wanted to, I'd be out by now...........

Unfortunately (for him), he's already 69 and probably won't ever see the light of day again.

I was surprised too. They are saying premeditated does not make first degree murder. They say it has to have an aggrevating factor such as robbery along with it for it to be first degree murder.

"Local media is reporting Marinello was on a nearby bike directing the murder."

Marinello committed the murder himself and in the process made some pretty damning mistakes. This guy deserves everything he gets. The mistake this poor woman made was to marry this conceited old loser.

Not too smart leaving his checklist behind....

-snip-

“Vince walked into a costume shop and bought a mustache. And in the conversation he said ‘do you need a beard to go with the mustache’ and he said ‘no I don't need a beard. I already have a beard’,” Sheriff Lee said.

Lee said the investigation then turned to a gun store. The manager of that store did not want to reveal his identity but did confirm for Eyewitness News that sometime in July, Vince Marinello came in with an older model .38 caliber pistol, asking if it worked. The manager said they went to a range and tried it out a few times and confirmed it did work. Then he said Marinello purchased a box of special .38 caliber bullets called Nyclads, which are covered with nylon. They are the same bullets deputies said were used to kill Elizabeth Marinello.

That gave investigators probable cause to search Marinello’s Lakeview FEMA trailer late Wednesday night, where Sheriff Lee said they found a sheet of paper that would be a key piece of evidence.

“We were absolutely shocked. It mentioned the bike, the gun and some other things. Almost like a checklist of what he had to do.”

Lee said the list also mentioned the mustache and a reminder to throw the gun away. Although investigators painted a very premeditated picture of what happened, premeditation is not a factor in first degree murder under Louisiana law.

Obviously, any lawyer worth his salt will concoct a defense based upon the following:

(1) Not guilty by virtue of insanity. Isn't anyone who leaves "tracks" like this man did totally insane; or, at least wants very much to be caught?

(2) Temporary insanity as a result of Post-Traumatic Stress Syndrome caused by Hurricane Katrina.

Did you post that this couple had been married for about a year? Did the whole marriage unravel because of Hurricane Katrina; or, were there other underlying causes [the bigamous nature of the marriage comes to mind ...].

I am ashamed of myself for finding so much sick humour in this very, very sad story; but, it does have a bit of a Three Stooges aspect to it with disguises, lists, etc.
