Remember September 11, 2001 as documented LIVE on Free Republic

As the 5th anniversary of the cowardly and tragic attack on America approaches, let us look back and remember as if we were there.

Many people were here on FR, reporting events with lightning speed, with unique insights, with analytical accuracy, with sadness, with anger.

Here are some links to the "live" threads from 9/11/01 here on FR. For those of you who have never seen them, it is like watching a piece of history unfold before you, in the familiar style of FR. For those who have seen before but not in a long time, this will be a good memory. For those who have revisited these threads many times over the years, and have continued to post on them, please continue to participate.

This can also be a great place and time for people to share their unique and special 9/11 stories...where they were, who was there, who they knew...who they lost.

We all lost 3000+ fellow Americans that day. As said many times here on FR....

NEVER FORGET! ALWAYS REMEMBER!

We will always remember you.

For those who don't know, BKO was the screen name of Barbara Olson, wife of Ted Olson, author, patriot...and FReeper.

Died on 9/11/01. Now, with our God, in heaven.

It's long past time. We have been coddling these people long enough. Just ask the French. They coddled these terrorists and ended up getting blown up by them. ?p? How long before the liberals start telling us we need to understand their rage? We'll give them rage.

Wow, AppyPappy was right on the money.

"What a compelling story."

I vowed then that we'd get at least one cell phone so that I wouldn't be in that type of non communicative state again. Of course now, we live in the town where he teaches and I can see the highschool from my back step.

It was a traumatic day, the fear has lessen for me but the trauma lives on for those families directly involved. I know that the crap that has been put out since then hasn't helped them.

Absolutely. That's why I love looking at these threads...you get to see a lot of FReepers who provided instant analysis with great insights.

God Bless FR.

I was working for DaySpring Cards at the time, the largest Christian greeting card company, well, ever. The ONLY place I could get current news online was FR. I remember posting updates to my own little conservative news site as the horrific events unfolded (the closest WAYBACK cache is here: http://web.archive.org/web/20010926191138/http://www.myrightstart.com/)

DaySpring still offers all the free 9/11/Patriot Day ecards I created for their web site here: http://www.dayspring.com/ecards/allcat.asp?category=34

Our kids were 2.5, 2.5 and just-in-kindergarten. We are on the West Coast. I was up at 6:00 with one twin, Teresa, and we watched Mr. Rogers and were 10 minutes into Barney when someone knocked at the door. When I answered it, our upstairs neighbor Alex asked if I were watching TV and knew the news. When I said "we're watching Barney" he proceeded to tell me what was happening. I looked at him and thought "He's drunk". It was just too incredible.

He quickly convinced me that something of importance was happening, and I told my husband in the bedroom to watch the news. I went to the living room with the kids to watch Barney and whatever else was on, and get our oldest ready for school.
Someone else mentioned the teachers' behavior - I was in shock and could only think to shield my children from the shock of events that I could not yet explain to them. At our local elementary school, the teachers moved slowly, somberly, but went through their day normally enough to give the children a normal day: a great gift to me and my husband as we struggled to understand what was happening.
I don't understand anymore why I did, but I did go to work after seeing my oldest safely into her kindergarten class. I remember that on a freeway where the average speed is 80 mph, 15 mph over the limit, every car traveled at exactly the speed limit.

It's a bit eerie reading through those posts, and yes insightful, as this post shows:

This is the response we reap from clinton's chickenshit, one day, "War on terrorism" when he bombed Osama Bin Laden as a diversion on the day Lewinsky testified..

That FReeper nailed it right then and there, and as we can see by all the hoopla over ABC's "The Path to 9/11", Clinton and the rat party are still trying to hide it to this day!!

I flew back to New York Wednesday, 9/19, arriving early in the AM on 9/20. I'm not sure why I went; I just had a strong urge to get down there.

I got to Ground Zero about 0830. I was only 200 feet away
from the rubble. It was unlike anything I had ever seen.

We all remember the images. What is difficult to explain is the smell and the taste of the dust that was impossible not to inhale. The pile was still smoking.

The strangest thing was looking up and seeing emptiness insteae of the towers I was so used to seeing. Those were the two biggest structures you can imagine.

There were flyers of loved ones posted all around. The windows of nearby buildings were ash covered all the way to the top floors. Police and military were everywhere.

Had they asked me to help, I would have done whatever. I would have crawled thru the rubble, carried or lifted things, or people, anything.

I stared at the devastation and wondered why we had not bombed anyone yet. My emotions were very raw at that time.

Normally New Yorkers go about there business without much thought of anyone else. But as I walked through Manhattan that day, I noticed something striking; whenever you would walk passed someone, they would look you in the eye. They might slowly nod, or give half-hearted smiles. People were acknowledging each other and comforting one another.

That evening, President Bush gave what I believe was one of the greatest speeches in American history.

It breaks my heart that many in this country have forgotten and given up the fight, or they have become bored with it.

The War on Terror is an obsession for me because of how I felt on 9/11.

I found this quote from the architect of the WTC about his creation:

'The World Trade Center should,' Yamasaki said, 'because of its importance, become a living representation of man's belief in humanity, his need for individual dignity, his belief in the cooperation of men, and through this cooperation his ability to find greatness.' "

The wife and I had driven all night to get to Baltimore. I was going to watch Cal Ripken for the last time in a game. I'd grown up watching him play every day for 2632 straight games.

I woke up right before the 2nd plane hit and as I stared at the TV, I knew I had to get Jackie and myself back to Ohio.

Proof on how the world has changed; if this happenned (again) today, none of us would find it too incredible anymore.

Thanks.

I'm always impressed as I have re-read these threads over the years, how many FReepers were instantly able to analyze and post then, much of what we now know to be fact.

It's equally depressing how, to this day, so many have turned from the truth.

I'm certain that you are very glad that you did go, as hard as it may have been.

I grew up in NJ and lived in Manhattan for 7 years some time ago. I have not been back there since 1998, but will be there for business for the first time, next week.

I stretched out my trip to have some time to go to the site. It will be very emotional for me. I grew up seeing those buildings going up...it will be like a hole in my heart.

I know I was on the internet and found out about it that way and then went and turned on the television and ran back and forth between the two. For a long time I had no recollection of posting here on FR and was surprised to find I had posted a couple of times on this thread that fateful morning. http://www.freerepublic.com/focus/fr/520310/posts
