MEXICO CITY (Reuters) - Mexican President-elect Felipe Calderon said on Thursday the flow of illegal workers to the United States would not stop, saying the two countries needed to work together to solve the problem.
A court this week named Calderon winner of the July presidential election after throwing out fraud claims by his leftist rival.
Calderon, from the same conservative party as President Vicente Fox, is expected to be a U.S. ally in Latin America, but he warned that U.S. lawmakers should recognize that illegal immigration was a fact of life.
"We can't ignore it. We can't make it disappear by decree," he told foreign journalists. "We have to find sensible mechanisms between the two countries to solve the problem jointly."
U.S. Senate Majority Leader Bill Frist said on Wednesday Republicans were dropping efforts to pass a bill before the November midterm elections that would have given millions of illegal immigrants a path to eventual citizenship. Congress would focus instead on border security.
Activists supporting comprehensive immigration measures gathered in Washington on Thursday for a march but their hopes for a massive rally with tens of thousands of marchers seemed unlikely to materialize.
Calderon who takes power on December 1, also urged Washington to curb narcotics consumption in the United States to help Mexico in its fight against drug gangs.
"A greater commitment by American authorities to reducing drug-taking and the demand is essential. Otherwise, this issue is never going to end," he said.
More than 1,000 people have been killed this year in a gang war for control of smuggling routes into the United States.
The scale of the crime challenge facing Calderon was gruesomely highlighted on Wednesday when 20 masked gunmen burst into a bar in the western city of Uruapan and dumped five human heads

"the two countries needed to work together to solve the problem."
Mexico can supply half the concrete and concertina wire.
That would be a lot more effective than expecting them to supply half the border security.
That would be impossible...
How about a good fence that's watched night and day?
One in every 12 people "breaking into America has a criminal record.
By 2050, there will be 100 million Hispanics concentrated in the U.S. Southwest.
Between 10 and 20 percent of the populations of Mexico, Central America and the Caribbean have already moved to the U.S.
Each month, the U.S. Border Patrol apprehends more illegal aliens entering the country, 150,000, than there are American troops in Iraq.
Ever wonder why the folw is only one way? How about Mexico fixing their internal problems and making people happier to stay there?
The way I see annex Mexico and 90% of our problems of illegals would go away..
How about if we arm a Mexican insurgency and help it overthrow the rotten, thieving oligarchy that has had a stranglehold on Mexico pretty much forever, Senor Presidente?
Americans have done that before. One time they ended up having a revolution that led to an independent Texas Republic.
How about the flow of criminals, old people and pregnant women seeking free health care and other benefits?
Immigration Reform:
Enforcing the laws on the books.
And deporting enough illegals over a VERY TALL fence all along the border
so that some will eventually self-deport.

This should make a lot happsy. "Congress would focus instead on border security."
All good, common-sense steps.
But the key is enforcing laws against illegal employers.
Take away the saucer of milk and the feral cats go away.

Mexico is a hostile nation and has never been our friend. There has always been a resentment of the more successful Anglos to the North who at least they once respected and feared. But no more, because Clinton and George Bush and the rest of the hacks in DC made illegal immigration into a big joke. Where the hacks and their friends want cheap laborers and cheap household help. Where laws they are sworn to uphold are not enforced.
Mexicans are tough and see how soft we have become. Soft as far as having pride in our nation. Enough pride to enforce immigration laws
It looks like we are back to square one. Another Mexican president elect that doesn't have a clue. Looking for an American handout while blaming America first. Is he a Fox clone?
You might want to revise that number, it's just a tad high.
May 2006 - 105,444 April 2006 - 126,546 March 2066 - 160,705 February 2006 - 125,035 January 2006 - 101,216 December 2005 - 52,672
The average for the past 6 months is 111,936.
Now these are just the crossings along the US/Mexico Border, but if you add the northern border, air and sea and the ones us CBP Officers kick out at the ports of entry, you might be up to an average of 125,000 a month.
Calderon is entirely correct about this however.
