BATAVIA, N.Y. -- Five parents who asked to transfer their children out of Batavia High School classes with a transsexual teacher have been denied, according to city schools Superintendent Richard Stutzman.
The written requests did not meet the guidelines set out by the district, Stutzman said Tuesday without providing specifics.
"That's all between the school, the teacher, the parents," he said.
Other students were allowed to adjust their schedules because their requests were based on changes in their academic programs, Stutzman said.
Fall classes began Wednesday in Batavia, 31 miles southwest of Rochester.
Diagnosed with a transsexual disorder, the teacher is still going through a medical transition but returned to school dressed as a woman -- and addressed as a female.
Under state and federal laws, a person with a transsexual disorder is considered disabled, is protected from discrimination and must be reasonably accommodated by an employer.
The teacher will instruct about 100 students this year and was to make a "brief statement" at the start of class, then proceed with the course work, the superintendent said.
Among several students heading to school Wednesday, some said the situation was weird or awkward, while others said they didn't have a problem with it.
"If he wants to do it, then that's him," said senior Carissa Visalli, 17.
The district has conducted information meetings about the transsexual teacher for staff and parents

Very nice. Had you been in my school, you'd have been expelled instantly for that little stunt. Apparently you think it's OK for kids to do stuff like that. I disagree.
Instead, I think your teacher should have had the right to grab you by your shirt collar, drag you out of the class and beat the crap out of you.
Smarta$$ punk kids who think it's amusing to terrorize teachers are right down there at the bottom of my list. There are way too many of them, and the schools aren't allowed to discipline them any more.

DBeers ususally is doing this list but he's busy right now; I may be able to do it again in the future.
That would've been a *courtesy* to the students who will now have this distraction knowing this guy had himself neutered.
It will be a big deal to him. He needed help and he got mutilated.
In the movie "Batman Begins" Bruce Wayne said, "Anyone who goes around dressed as a bat clearly has issues." Batman has issues and he's dangerous, but only to criminals. And, if he decides to, he can put his batsuit away.
Someone who actually has a doctor take a knife to his body because of his issues - well, do we really know what else is going on inside his head?
