CA: Governor Tries to Mend Fences With GOP

SACRAMENTO — Fresh from a season of cooperation with Democratic lawmakers, Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger moved Wednesday to appease members of his own party by signing a series of GOP-sponsored bills and vetoing a measure that would have banned homophobic comments from school textbooks and curricula.

Since the legislative session ended last week, Schwarzenegger has acted on bills of interest to key parts of the state's Republican coalition: veterans, businesses and social conservatives. On Wednesday, he signed six GOP-sponsored bills, four aimed at helping veterans and two designed to keep children farther away from registered sex offenders.

Schwarzenegger also vetoed a Democratic bill that would have prohibited public schools from teaching anything that "reflects adversely" on people because of their sexual orientation. His action came a day after a rally was held outside the Capitol by conservatives who were upset that he had signed a bill last month prohibiting any organization that receives state funds from discriminating against homosexuals.

Political analysts said the governor needed to reinvigorate Republican voters after a legislative session in which he agreed to an increase in the minimum wage, $37 billion in new state debt for public works projects, and an anti-global warming measure that will mean new restrictions on industrial emissions.

The last act particularly inflamed corporate backers of Schwarzenegger, who complain that it will be a substantial financial burden on businesses. ...

--snip--

"The governor's No. 1 challenge between now and election day is motivating core voters," said Jon Fleischman, a former director of the state Republican Party and publisher of a popular conservative website, FlashReport.org.

--snip--

Steve Schmidt, Schwarzenegger's campaign manager, said the governor's decisions on the bills were based on their merits and dismissed the idea that Schwarzenegger's conservative support needed shoring up.

as one looks at who surrounds him and some of the yet to be signed legislation, he isn't lacking much of what you describe. Thanks!

how about just vetoing everything sponsored by a democrat like Sheila Kuehl, Mark Leno or Richard (my sister is a Communist leader) Alarcon? that would mend a lot of fences and prevent further erosion of the quality of life in CA.

That depends. If you explain your vision based on facts well enough so people can understand you fully, you can still prevail.

One of California's biggest losses over the last ten to fifteen years was that there has been no highly visible person presenting sound conservatism to California's populace. Schwarzenegger missed a huge opening to do this. That was perhaps his worst failure to this point. Then of course not following through on many of those sound conservative policies followed.

If we don't hawk conservatism in California, we will definately NOT make any sales.

Welcome to the forum. Nice to see you here.

"He signed SB 1441, a bill that will penalize state-funded businesses and organizations that fail to endorse homosexuality, bisexuality and transsexuality "

Didn't read the bill ?

It says nothing about "failing to endorse" anything.

"Discriminating against" is not " failing to endorse "

This bill appears to be simply housekeeping, to bring State laws into accordance with Federal statutes against discrimination.

Oh, I'm motivated, all right.

I'm going to support him and hope that he becomes a conservative in the 2nd term.

So, how's the Tooth Fairy and Easter Bunny these days? Any luck on that $200,000,000 lotto ticket yet?

Folks, I hate to say it, but Arnold is the best the GOP can do in CA. considering todays political climate. He is running for reelection, so he feels he has to move to the center. I wished he had not green lighted the global warming bill. But if Phil was in the governors chair things would be a lot worse. I know a lot of you do not want to hear it but that is the way it is.

"we've heard that spin from a couple others here as well. "

It's not spin when that is what the bill plainly says ... the only spin is when you re-interpret the wording.

I can relate...

The FlaGOP gave us Charlie Crist......I won't even comment...

Suffice to say this may be the first election I sit out in over 30 years.

What were they thinking????

But having said that, ....your governor did the right thing by vetoing this indoctrination bill.....whatever else he does in the future.

Well as I read the bill, Church and bible colleges that want to receive state scholarships, darn well better not teach what the bible says about homosexuality.

Sounds like a bluff.

It was too bad McClintock wasn't allowed on the stage in the 2003 Recall debates. What an opportunity was missed.

We've only had one Democrat in office in almost 25 years and he was booted out.

That's what I thought. So, this one little bill, keeping gay stuff out of school texts, is supposed to make up for transgender teachers and protection for 13 year old lesbians?
