Clay Aiken is in line to be named to the President's Committee for People with Intellectual Disabilities, the White House said Wednesday.

Aiken, a Raleigh native who gained fame as a runner-up on "American Idol," once worked as a YMCA counselor.

The committee's Web site said it advises the president on issues pertaining to people with intellectual disabilities. The committee was established in 1961 by President John Kennedy as the President's Panel on Mental Retardation.

A White House press release said President Bush intends to make the appointment. Officials did not say when.

The singer's new album, "A Thousand Different Ways," is due out later this month.

First came the Panel on Mental Retardation, and I said nothing. Then the PMR begat the Committee for People with Intellectual Disabilities yet I said nothing. When CPID begat the Symposium on the Differently Mentaled, again I said nothing. But dammit, the College of Latent Geniuses is too much.

President's Committee for People with Intellectual Disabilities

Sounds like another one of Bush's compassionate conservative programs. Why are we wasting money on the democrats who this is obviously meant for?

Before he was on American Idol, he worked with kids with disabilities.

He majored in Special Ed at UNC and was a "CAP MR/DD worker" (The Community Alternatives Program for Persons with Mental Retardation/Developmental Disabilities, North Carolina.

The President's Committee for People with Intellectual Disabilities (PCPID), formerly The President's Committee on Mental Retardation (PCMR), is a federal advisory committee, established by presidential executive order to advise the President of the United States and the Secretary of The Department of Health and Human Services on issues concerning citizens with intellectual disabilities, coordinate activities between different federal agencies and assess the impact of their policies upon the lives of citizens with intellectual disabilities and their families.

We need one of these for tax and fee increases on the rest of us.

I am tickled to death! He is from Cary, NC, and was a special education teacher before American Idol. I am always glad to see a native Tarheel make good (except for the "Breck girl").

First, if you believe the Enquirer than you should be ashamed of yourself. Second, aren't we the ones that WISHED that people would not discuss there sexual orientation. Why is it that this site is so fascinated with gays? I don't get it and sometimes really wonder if this is truly a conservative site. I am a Catholic Conservative who does not agree with homosexuals, but do not discuss them hours at a time.
