Osama's being in Afghanistan had nothing to do with the US's involvement there, and he has said as much himself. He led a mostly foreign, Arab group of volunteers while the US supported the Afghans.

You are right, we weren't really dealing with Osama. I remember the Northern Alliance who were supposed to be the good Islamic warlords, and the Taliban I suppose in the South who were the bad Islamic warlords. All of them were "mujahideen" who at least agreed that the Russians should be run out. And in case anyone doubts how tough these warlords are, remember they DID run the Russians out.
