The most touching thing, to me, was the people at the hospital, lined up, later in the day, ready for casualties that never came.
For me it came later in the week; the handlers of rescue dogs burying themselves in the rubble so their dogs could find live rescuees because the lack of the real thing had left even the dogs depressed.
