I was at work that day and missed all the coverage until afternoon. It still doesn't quite seem real. I KNOW it happened. But it just seems so incredible.
I'm never up that early, never. I never watch Good Morning America, never. That day I woke up early & was watching Good Morning America. Watching live was surreal.
My work place was evacuated by 10am (I'm upstate from NYC in a LARGE office complex). However, I was asked to stay behind to help setup an initial mapping application for inital assessments in Albany. Anyways, I wasn't on the road until almost 3:30pm on 9/11. Taking the Thruway home, I found that I was virtually the only civilian vehicle for over 20 miles heading westbound as I traveled at over 80mph right past two separate NYSP patrols. Eastbound-to-southbound, the signs simply read, "All access to NYC closed."
The next day into work, everyone drove well below the speed limit despite low volume and there was almost no dry face left to be seen once the military and firefighter convoy made its way through the passing lane. I cried the entire way into work.
