WASHINGTON, Sept. 6, 2006 -- Columbia, S.C., will remember the victims of the Sept. 11, 2001, terrorist attacks on the United States and honor servicemembers past and present with a Freedom Walk Sept. 11, according to a news release from the city.

The walk will begin at the State Capitol at 11:30 a.m. and conclude at City Memorial Park with a wreath-laying ceremony. Participants will include members of the general public, public service representatives, state and local government officials and representatives of all military services, the release said.

Jenny Sanford, wife of South Carolina Gov. Mark Sanford, is scheduled to participate.

The city of Columbia and “Connect and Join,” are sponsoring the event. Connect and Join is an online communications and activities site connecting families separated by deployment or who have family members living away from home due to job-related responsibilities, according to the organization’s Web site.

The group is a member of the Defense Department’s America Supports You program, which spotlights ways the American people and the nation’s corporate sector support U.S. servicemembers.

More than 120 similar Freedom Walks are scheduled in all 50 states to remember those who lost their lives on Sept. 11, 2001, and to honor America’s military veterans, past and present. The local events around the country parallel the Washington, D.C., Freedom Walk scheduled for Sept. 10 and sponsored by the America Supports You program.

Information for people interested in organizing Freedom Walk observances in their communities is available at the America Supports You Freedom Walk Web site.

I would hate to think the local moobats would be there protesting America's important work in the middle east. Just what every solemn commemoration needs; a bunch of spoiled whiney peaceniks!
