FANS of the Crocodile Hunter have rushed to express shock and sorrow at his death - but one famous Australian doesn't feel the same pain. In an article for The Guardian, feminist and activist Germaine Greer announces: "The animal world has finally taken its revenge on Irwin." She criticises Irwin for teaching "a whole generation of kids in shorts seven sizes too small" to "shout in the ears of animals with hearing 10 times more acute than theirs".

No. You apparently WISh that I were saying that, but I did not even HINT at that.
Provoking animals for the camera or for the crowd - that was his goal.
On the side he did nice things, true.
But the nice things are not what made him the big money, what posed the risks, or what eventually killed him.
I explicitly did NOT endorse Greer's words.
I am disappointed that people are lionizing a man who constantly put himself in danger of serious injury when it was not noble or necessary. And now his children don't have a father.
Irwin is rich and famous because he purposefully agitated dangerous animals to get good video shots.
He died in the process of doing just that.
He did not die while building an animal shelter or teaching kids about animals.
How would you have scripted his death ?
We need bus control legislation NOW!
So wasn't it ironic that a critter that he didn't even intend to bother, stabbed him to death.
That said, I understand your idea re staying safe. . .my son-in-law, now a Father; no longer scales rocky mountain cliffs; and for that I am grateful. But he does travel. . and he runs. . .rides. . .fishes. . .canoes/kayaks. . . and the truth is, LIFE is always a risk. . .if even just staying in bed.
The life Steve lived; with his knowledge and expertise; was probably no more dangerous than one of 'us' driving down an interstate. . .in five o'clock traffic. Arriving home, surely being a miracle for millions of commuters; travelers; every day.
Doing a 'risky' job and surviving is a challenge for huge populations of individuals; be it 'working' and/or serving their communities and country. (Should Father's be astronauts or airlilne pilots? Should they be Life-guards at a beach?) Jobs infinitum, are a challenge, as is just living.
Bottom line. ..the old. . .'it's a jungle out there' IS apropos. . .and Steve was comfortable and committed; happy; living, working in his; and sharing it with the world as well.
"I explicitly did NOT endorse Greer's words."
With all due respect, endorsing (or at least agreeing with) Greers words is exactly what youre doing. So shes left wing and youre right wing this opinion is hardly governed by that so you can admit you share the same viewpoint.
Tiny minded, liberal Yutz
I repeat, don't you ever do your homework?
I would not wish an untimely death upon anyone.
If you are asking if this was an appropriate way for him to die, then my answer is that many will think so, but considering his family I won't go along with that notion.
Because it makes a good story does not mean it is a good thing.
I don't think he really wanted his kids to grow up fatherless, so my answer is that this was a crappy death.
"He died while doing something he loved" is pretty lame romanticism. If HAD to die with young kids, then dying while doing something you love is better than doing something you hate. But he did NOT have to die - and that is my point.
The made-for-TV-movie people I am sure are salivating. This biopic will be a ratings feast, for sure.
And as an aside: Following a giant dangerous stingray around at close range IS provocation. Stingrays don't like to be near other creatures. Boxing them in betweena cameraman and Irwin was obviously enough provocation to cause his death.
Very good!
I wonder if there is any chance of the two of them getting together?
You should have seen her on the tele tonight. This photograph flatters her. The interviewer made a proper clown of her.
Where is it that they "boxed" more than one ray, i.e. the one he was chasing and they were filming. That's not the ray that stung him.
I never heard of Steve Irwin before this, but what exactly makes you think that he "expects sympathy or accolades" from anyone?
"Germaine Spillane"
Heh, heh! The spoof was titled "My Gun is Cute" and had lines like "it wasn't a pretty sight. Raw, red, cracked skin." and "I fired up a cig."
But I remember at the time (1972) what a hardcore man-hater Greer was. Still an evil b!tch.
I never heard of Steve Irwin before this, but what exactly makes you think that he "expects sympathy or accolades" from anyone?"
I think Id expect sympathy if I was killed by a rogue guitar pick
