MIAMI — Buster Davis talked and talked in the weeks preceding Florida State's visit to Miami, so often that Seminoles coach Bobby Bowden worried his star linebacker was yapping a little too much.
Davis would tell anyone within earshot that he believes the Seminoles are national title contenders, even after five losses in 2005, then say the biggest step toward that goal would be beating Miami on opening night.
"He backed it up," Bowden said Tuesday.
Davis' game-high 12 tackles _ 3 1/2 of them for losses _ helped key Florida State's 13-10 win over the Hurricanes at the Orange Bowl on Monday night, and may have given those Seminole title hopes a huge boost. Florida State plays only three more road games all season, against North Carolina State, Duke and Maryland.

College football ping
One game into the season, and that won by a field goal, is no reason to boast. On the up side, Miami is a quality opponent.
For anyone watching this game last night you saw defensive speed that you are not going to find anywhere else and an intensity that is unmatched. Both of these teams of D that you win a national championship with.
Larry Coker has taken all the life out of the team. Along with fewer penalties comes fewer wins, and big plays have become a rarity.
I don't see Miami giving up a lot of points this year. Their LBs and DBs are smokin fast.
This is one of college football's best rivalries and yes, they talk trach about it when one team wins.
GO U OF CHICAGO MAROONS!
Until Florida puts the hurt on them.
Go Gators!!!!

In my opinion, MIT is fielding the best team in college football. True, they have been overlooked by all the national polls and all the smug half-wits who do those dumb shows on TV but the fact is that MIT has recruited well and is poised to put themselves on the college football map this year.
QB Wesley Rickenbacker is going to have a breakout year and a shot at the Heisman. In the first game against Bunker Hill College last weekend, Rickenbacker tossed four TD's and went 34-45 with 423 yards total passing yards as MIT rolled over Bunker Hill 55-10.
And the game was not as close as the score indicates. On the very first play of the game, Bunker Hill QB Sylvester Cevero was intercepted by MIT cornerback Lester Randolph who took it in 73 yards for the score. On the next set of downs, Rickenbacker moved his team into the end zone in just four plays. Then after a Bunker Hill fumble, kicker Brent Douglas slammed a 57-yard field goal to put MIT up 17-0 just barely four minutes into the game!
Running back Chester Morgan rolled up 144 yards rushing for 2 TDs on just 11 carries. And Rickenbacker spread his 34 completions between 7 receivers!
You heard it hear first. There is some serious rumbling going on in Cambridge, MA, and I'm not talking about Harvard. I'm talking MIT. By next year at this time, when you think college gridiron, you will be thinking of #1 ranked MIT.
Percy Harvin for Heisman!
My sense is that the national champions the last few years have been so because of solid teams with great q'backs and receivers.
Carson Palmer at USC and at Texas' Vince Young are proving that in the pros.
Troy Smith at Ohio State is one of the top q'backs with an entire corps of receivers, running backs, linemen. OSU is formidable.
I'd be extremely wary of Notre Dame and West Virginia, too. Both have awesome q'backs and solid teams.
Yep, Rickenbacker and MIT.........Heisman and national championship. I admire your loyalty and question where peyote and mushrooms are readily available in your area???????????? LOL! Go MIT!
Roll Tide Roll
One of the best title games was the 2003 Fiesta with Miami vs OSU. Hard nosed D that any throw back pro coach would admire. Last year's was an offensive show that was good but lacking in toughness.
Go Bobby!
I'm an OSU fan and an Ohio native and resident.
That game haunts me. I don't think we won.
I do NOT think there was interference on the 4th down Sharpe call. I was in the Columbus airport about a month ago sending my daughter off to Germany, and they were replaying that game again. Same impression...no way that was a pass interference. None. And the flag was late, too.
The only think I could think is that the ref was saying the receiver was held up too far from the goal line (what is it 5 yards?), but he never made that public if that's what he thought.
Miami was the champ in 2003., imho.
Two years back, the 'Noles beat the Gators, playing in the Swamp, and now they've beat Miami, playing in the Eye of the Hurricane!
