One particular loss connected with Steve Irwin is that he made intelligent programs that kids could watch and learn from and that parents didn't have to monitor for sex, mindless violence, cussing, idiot special effects, endless explosions or innuendo because there was none of it (although perhaps inadvertently in the animal world). He seemed totally unlike the vast majority of Hollywood in 2006 that seems populated by self-absorbed, self-important simpletons with little if any talent.

I agree. It was hard enough for adults to explain JFK's death to younger baby boomers, this has to be very traumatic in that he was so very real and looked up to (like Dad) to so many kids.

Kids and school groups were prominent among the one million visitors a year to Irwin's Australia Zoo park on the Sunshine Coast.
The host met many of them personally.
Sad and tragic loss of a GOOD man.

Thanks, you beat me to it. This guy entertained and educated kids and it wasn't with a chest full of gold necklaces spouting off profanity. He did good.

"He wants to be a Crocodile Hunter when he grows up." Steve did his job well.......the children who loved and admired him and learned from him will carry on his legacy of conservation and education about endangered and midunderstood animals and reptiles.
I'm far from 11 years old but I loved watching his shows, I learned a lot about animals, various countries, WW2 in the Pacific and so much more.

I never watched his show regularly, and my daughter is certainly too young for it, but I did get a kick out of Steve Irwin personally. He was one of the last "alpha" male role models out there for kids. He seemed like such a hoot.
And wasn't there a commercial for ESPN where he tackled the UF Gator mascot, shouting, "CRIKEY! AIN'T HE A BEAUT!?"
