Boston, MA (LifeNews.com) -- Haleigh Poutre was the victim of child abuse and was nearly killed via euthanasia when Massachusetts officials gave up on her after she entered a coma. Now Poutre, once termed "brain dead" by doctors, continues to improve and is speaking a few words, her grandmother says.
Sandra Sudyka, the girl's biological grandmother, is no longer allowed to visit her granddaughter and now says she is ready to speak to the media about Poutre's condition.
She told The Republican newspaper that she last saw Poutre on July 18 but indicated she was "doing well."
"She was bright-eyed and smiling. She is always responsive to us," Sudyka explained.
Department of Social Services had asked Sudyka not to talk with reporters about Haleigh, but since they will no longer allow her and Haleigh's biological mother, Allison Avrett, to visit the 12 year-old, she said she's going to talk to the media.
"I decided since they broke the deal, I am going to talk. People should know how well she is doing," Sudyka told the newspaper.
"They don't want people to know how she is doing after they wanted to pull the plug," Sudyka said.
DSS spokeswoman Denise Monteiro declined an interview with The Republican but said that the visiting privileges have been suspended, not terminated.
Haleigh first began speaking in June, her grandmother told the newspaper.
"I was saying to her 'I love you,' and she was trying to say 'love' and it came out as a vibration...'ove,'" Sudyka said.
Sudyka, who is working with an attorney to adopt the girl, said she has said hello, responds to comments and questions, speaks nonverbally and is able to write her name. Haleigh can't walk and is confined to a wheelchair.
Avrett, Poutre's biological mother, lost custody of her daughter after physically abusing her. Poutre was put into a foster home where her adoptive parents also abused her. Her adopted mother committed suicide after abusing Poutre so much she had to be hospitalized.
DSS took Poutre into custody and when she appeared to slip into a coma, the agency asked the state Supreme Court for permission to take her life. That's when Poutre began responding.
Poutre has been receiving physical, speech and occupational therapy since January 26 at Franciscan Hospital for Children in Brighton.
Gov. Mitt Romney appointed a commission to look into how the state failed to properly handle the girl's case.
No, it's from Dick & Jane.

Ooh, wouldn't that be great. And y'know, it just might happen. One week we have news of a drug that "wakes" the comatose. The next week word of a man whose brain rewired itself after 22 years. The next week a demonstration that a PVS patient (here) has both will and consciousness, despite the inability to communicate.
Of course we've had many another story over the years about comatose patients -- often at risk of being dehydrated / starved to death -- who knew EVERYTHING that was going on around them but couldn't so much as move a muscle to say so. And a lot more stories from medically unconscious patients who were "out of body" and watched the surgery being performed on them and could relate the details later.
Exactly. They are too lazy to investigate anything on their own, they just passively pass along what they are told to with a cut-and-paste job. I wish there were some way to make them grow the, uh, equipment associated with action and courage.
I am glad you Spotted my misreference.
Yeah, that would be a great tag line but mine's full. Maybe we can get a volunteer for that Proverbs.
Once in a while they catch a bad guy for appearances.
We probably wouldn't have that problem if law enforcement had done their job properly.
What I mean is, here we have a young healthy woman who ended up in a hospital after her husband came home.
About a year later a bone scan turned up numerous recent past injuries to her bones. What was done about that? Nothing of course.
Then 2 years after that, he admitted under oath that he tried to kill her in the nursing home. What was done about that? Nothing of course.
Then about 3 years later, Carla Iyer reported Michael's bad intentions. What was done about that? Nothing of course.
I guess I would make a terrible Florida cop.
You sure would. You'd have to go to stupid school for years and years to pretend to be stupid enough to qualify.
>> What I mean is, here we have a young healthy woman who ended up in a hospital after her husband came home.
Since the M.E. shot down Michael's pathetic little alibi, none of the trolls will address the issue. How DID a healthy young woman end up face down on the floor in cardiac arrest soon after her husband came home late one Saturday night?
The thing is, you have to answer that question before you can form a rational opinion on the rest of the case. If Michael injured Terri in the first place, then it was unconscionable to support his efforts to murder her later.
But that's going too fast for a troll.
Do you think it would of made a difference if the trolls were on our side?
I simply refer to your earlier link on fools. LOL. In my world of white and black and absolutes, I hold out little hope for these bots of their evil master.
I have read the Saturday article by Anthony Man regarding that selfish, opportunistic Michael Schiavo. Will someone tell him to move in with Cindy Sheehan?
He has caused more trouble for the parents of Terri Schiavo and our Gov. Jeb Bush than anyone should be allowed to. If readers out there in citizenship land had an ounce of sense, they would understand the real story of why the governor had to step in on this case. Plus, ladies and gentlemen, when the courts are already giving orders, you have the government in it already. That's in everything you do. Schiavo is quoted as saying, "We don't elect them to run our families" (meaning the government). "We in America can't let this happen." OK, let's stop welfare then. That's government running your family.

Terri on the road to recovery before the second stage began.
CALL IT "Terri's Revenge." Terri Schiavo, the Florida woman diagnosed as being in a persistent vegetative state, was the subject of a huge legal battle and intense media attention when her husband, Michael Schiavo, wanted to disconnect her feeding tube, effectively ending her life.
Now comes a study published in the journal Science that sheds new light on PVS. A 23-year-old English woman, who sustained severe head injuries in an auto accident in July 2005, became a subject of study at the British Medical Research Council's Cognition and Brain Sciences Unit. Although she was comatose and considered "vegetative," new tests found the young woman had considerable brain activity.

Since the Reagan Administration first embraced and got in bed with the religious right, a cornerstone of Right Wing ideology has been the so-called "pro-life" stance. In my thinking, they are anything but. What? You ask? The righties are not "pro-life?" In a word, no. Of course they are against abortion and many types of birth control. So that makes them "pro-birth." Once the child is born, their interest drops off dramatically.

.....................
The announcement in the journal Science that a comatose womans brain showed consistent activity while being scanned following verbal cues, sets the stage for the next Terri Schiavo case. When being told to imagine she was playing tennis, for example, the same parts of her brain were activatived that would be activated in a healthy person thinking about playing tennis.
Conservatives will likely jump on this case to undermine the rights of patients to decide in advance what medical interventions they dont want if they are unable to speak for themselves. But that would be putting politics above science, as the facts show:

Infertile couples desperate to conceive children are turning increasingly to fertility specialists for help. Yet, widespread use of assisted reproductive technology (ART) has led to a completely unforeseen consequence: the creation of the worlds largest population of frozen human embryos. That reality has ignited a vigorous moral debate among scientists, politicians, theologians, and parents about what should be done with the surplus store of nascent human life.

The Vatican (LifeNews.com) -- In a meeting with Canadian bishops, Pope Benedict XVI criticized the North American country for its laws allowing abortion. He said they result in part because numerous pro-abortion Catholic politicians are ignoring their faith and putting their own beliefs ahead of the values of the church.

What you're asking is whether trolls can stop being trolls. So far as anybody knows, the answer is "no." But hey, I believe in miracles.
Now, that makes me laugh out loud! Next step -- Cindy and Mike become an "item" on the front cover of all the tabloids ("Jodi heartbroken"). Then the headlines could scream, "It's all over, Cindy dumps cheating Schiavo for Michael Moore." "Mikey makes a move on Susan Sarandon, gets a black eye." "Mikey seen on park bench cooing with Helen Thomas."
Beautifully said!
Sensible opinion. But it's not only this case. We have far too many stories and studies like this to have any confidence in medical opinions about so-called PVS. The truth is, brain science is still primitive, and no matter what advances are made, we never will find "will" or "mind" inside by peering at "brain" from the outside.
More revenge for Terri will come when we clear away the lies and listen to all the media- and court-suppressed evidence that she was not in a PVS.
