FATALLY injured by a stingray, Steve Irwin pulled its barb out of his chest before losing consciousness, dramatic footage of his last moments reveals.
Friend John Stainton said the footage of the stingray attack which took the life of the Crocodile Hunter on the Great Barrier Reef yesterday was "shocking".
Mr Irwin, 44, died after the stingray barb punctured his chest while snorkelling off Port Douglas, in far north Queensland, yesterday.
A cameraman captured the incident during filming for Irwin's new project with daughter Bindi, eight, that was to debut in the United States next year.
"I did see the footage and it's shocking," Mr Stainton said today in Cairns.
"It's a very hard thing to watch because you're actually witnessing somebody die ... and it's terrible."
Mr Stainton, also a producer and director of Irwin's popular television shows, said the footage showed Mr Irwin pulling the barb out of his chest before losing consciousness.
"It shows that Steve came over the top of the ray and the tail came up, and spiked him here (in the chest), and he pulled it out and the next minute he's gone.

well done........
I also thought of Hensen today, and had the same feeling of loss. The world again has lost somebody who gave us all a little bit of magic and was able to bring out the kid in all of us.
Thank you - you're very kind.
His passing is a huge story everywhere and very tragic and sad.
I'd guess he didn't know it had penetrated his heart. He'd probably have been aware of the toxin and wanted to get it out as quickly as possible and it makes sense IF it hadn't hit his heart. He was in a lose/lose situation.
Sorry for the loss of your fellow Aussie. I loved watching the guy. The first time I saw his show, I couldn't believe it. The world needs more Steve Irwins.
I agree. What a rotten deal.
My bloody oath it does!
Big here too - Hannity and Combs (actually Lowry and Combs tonight) gave it the full hour this evening - sad loss......
"Bindi is the most well-rounded kid her age, and by crikey, is the most croc savvy kid her age in the world."
Steve and Terri's daughter, Bindi Sue Irwin, is actually named for Steve's favorite crocodile, Bindi, and his dog, Sui, who has, incidentally, appeared in numerous "Croc Hunter" episodes with Steve and Terri.

I think Bindi will carry on his legacy. She's got "it"
Wouldn't have mattered because as other news reports say, 1) the barb punctured his heart 2) the quantity of venom injected would have killed him almost immediately.
As they say:
"It will never happen to me!"
Additionally,
It's a good day when you don't have to see or hear Alan Colmes!
Wow, a State funeral. Steve represented all that is wonderful about life... and about Australia.
Perhaps you are right in the basic comparison, but I hope that is as far as the similarities go.
I do NOT want to see every Toms Harry Dick hawking "Criky!" mugs; "'E's a biggun!" caps, and shelves full of "Careful, mate!" Christmas ornaments.
The man and his family deserve more respect and privacy than the Dale Earnhardt feeding frenzy to cash in.
If you're a parent with a kid in the 5 to 14 age cohort - it's BIG here, too. Crikey! How am I gonna tell my little ones? Rest in Peace, Croc Hunter. Prayers for Terri, Bindi Sue and Bob.
