WASHINGTON, Sept. 4 As they prepare for a critical pre-election legislative stretch, Congressional Republican leaders have all but abandoned a broad overhaul of immigration laws and instead will concentrate on national security issues they believe play to their political strength.
With Congress reconvening Tuesday after an August break, Republicans in the House and Senate say they will focus on Pentagon and domestic security spending bills, port security legislation and measures that would authorize the administrations terror surveillance program and create military tribunals to try terror suspects.
We Republicans believe that we have no choice in the war against terror and the only way to do it is to continue to take them head-on whether it is in Iraq or elsewhere, said Representative John A. Boehner of Ohio, the majority leader.
they will stick us after the election
You might want to tone it down a bit, I certainly think that Larry (LS) has done more to advance conservative thought in the real world with his great best-selling book "A Patriot's History of the United States" than 99.9% of all Freepers. You might want to be a little less condescending.
Because both sides of the isle have already signed on to the North American Union idea and don't want to put up any roadblocks to that. So the focus will be on the WOT and home foreclosures.
LOL - that's rich considering the content of his posts.
Two months of legislative time is left before the midterms. If nothing regarding border/port security lands on the President's desk for his signature; IMHO, the GOP could be vulnerable.
The democratic stance on illegal immigration won't demoralilze and keep traditional midterm democratic voters at home.
The GOP stance on illegal immigration will demoralize and keep traditional midterm GOP voters at home.
The democrats don't have to be right or better on this issue as the democratic voters don't generally care that much, they just need the Republicans to be wrong.
Hmmm. You're making it sound like the teams are equal. They ain't. One's good, one's bad. And I told you so.
What happened to the previous bill?
Didn't it get stalled in the senate thanks to Mccain and Kennedy?
House Republicans are smart, they are concentrating their efforts on achieving something rather than an another immigration bill that gets stalled. The buchanite conservatives dont like it, but they are not known for their political smartness.
Won't lose this one because the opponent has a WORSE strategy for "dealing" with it than the GOP, and that's the simple logic that people here want to ignore.
Do you even read my posts? I've stated numerous times that the dems are bad news and will investigate the hell out of Bush and even fabricate something if they have to.
Rather than gloating and being condenscending in every post, maybe it would be better to stick to the actual issues.
In non-midterm elections, attracting independent minded voters is key as each party's base comes usually shows up in high numbers.
That isn't true for midterm elections which are traditionally low turnout - especially if a governor is not being elected. In 2002, 9/11 was only 13 months previous and it helped the GOP.
Those independent voters don't show up much in midterm election so it is all about energizing the base. Look on FR and see for yourself how engergized the base really is.
The GOP is going to lose seats, the only question is to what degree - do you disagree with that or do you think they will pick up seats?
That isn't "simple logic" it's a logical fallacy. The democratic policy on illegal immigration doesn't demoralize their base. The GOP policy on illegal immigration does demoralize ours.
Again, look at 1992. GOP voters withheld their vote from Bush because he agreed to raise taxes, knowing full well that it would lead to the election of Clinton that had an even worse strategy for "dealing" with the problem.
Well, consider me. I SWORE I would not vote for DeWhine because of illegals. But I cannot allow Brown to become Senator Brown. It just is unthinkable. So I have lied to myself (something I rarely do) and will vote for DeWine. I don't think I'm alone.
Hopefully they will come to their senses and craft a very simple bill that builds a wall and requires criminal prosecution of employers of illegals. That would probably save the House and might even turn to tide to the point that we pick up seats.
The amnesty debate can wait until after we see what the results of the wall and emplyers sanctions have. Once the daily invasion is stopped then we can finally start getting a handle on who is here and if they are hostile or not.
Admittedly I don't know much about Brown, but if the dem candidates are smart then they will keep a low profile and not do anything controversial. If they start talking about nationalized healthcare or raising taxes then they are screwed.
Of course they have Dean as their leader so intelligent campaigning is not their strong suit.
Most people fail to see how they are exclusive of each other. Of course the RINOS see destruction in one and votes in the other. Which one to put on the proverbial back burner??
I won't support anyone who has not come out staunchly anti-immigration. That includes my Congressman Joe Wilson who I have supported for decades since he was an upstart SC legislator. Even die-hard conservatives, or so I thought, are bowing to whatever the current agenda is, which is a North American treaty similar to the EU, I do believe. And right now they all make me sick.
So there I said that and I'm stickin' to it! :-)
