WASHINGTON, Sept. 4 As they prepare for a critical pre-election legislative stretch, Congressional Republican leaders have all but abandoned a broad overhaul of immigration laws and instead will concentrate on national security issues they believe play to their political strength.
With Congress reconvening Tuesday after an August break, Republicans in the House and Senate say they will focus on Pentagon and domestic security spending bills, port security legislation and measures that would authorize the administrations terror surveillance program and create military tribunals to try terror suspects.
We Republicans believe that we have no choice in the war against terror and the only way to do it is to continue to take them head-on whether it is in Iraq or elsewhere, said Representative John A. Boehner of Ohio, the majority leader.
Of course, we don't need any more low-skilled workers with tons of kids to put in our schools, so there would be no such program. But if there were one, it should be universally available. Saying that you can stay here if you manage to sneak across illegally is just insane, and saying that we can't do anything about it once they have is false and defeatist. Employer sanctions, detention of illegals caught, shipping them back and not enforcing the border, all those over time will eliminate all but a few of the illegals. Some can hide in the hollows, live in tents and sneak day labor here and there, but that is not the problem. People working for $6/hour doing construction jobs that our people will do IS the problem. People bringing whole families here, using schools and social services while paying no taxes IS the problem. People creating a mini-Mexico inside our inner cities, where English is not spoken and assimilation is not taught IS the problem. 50 Million new Democrat voters over the next 20 years IS the problem.
If only those at the top of the GOP could see that. They are trying to commit suicide, and we are trying to stop them. If we succeed, there is a chance we can stop this insanity before it ruins the conservative movement for all time. If not, enjoy your century in the wilderness, fellow conservatives.
Hey all you conservatives who vow not to show up in November because you're mad about immigration: Here's your treat if you show up. If you stay home and let Pelosi and co. takeover, when we incorporate Mexico into the United States and declare our official language Spanish and Arabic, don't come crying back at FR. If you show up and the GOP wins, you'll have a real legitimate position from which to vouch for really tough legislation. And you'll probably get it. But don't even think about bawling about "border security=national security" if you're willing to let the Dems screw everything up.
Andrew Sullivan is a whack job. The gay European pothead has nothing to add to our movement, he's way off the reservation, it's time to excommunicate.
That is ridiculous. You think it's bad now? Now it's just the Latinos. Pelosi and Murtha would love to bring Arabs into the country in the name of chic multiculturalism. But you? You don't care! You're a man of principle! Principle, dammit! I'm staying home, kicking back, having a beer, and watching those RINO demons lose!
So why focus on immigration, which is divisive, and confused, and won't be sorted out by election day?
Play to your strengths; remind voters why they should have Republicans in office.
Seems to me this is OLD news.
"The difference between you and me is that I don't see a difference between the R and D. Pelosi, Spector, Kennedy, it's all the same to me."
Then you, my friend, aren't paying attention. There's a war going on and either you're with us or you're with the terrorists. Got it?
You are right, the senate sees itself as the "smart" part of government.
They are still infested with the trent lott go along to get along mentality of the 1970's.
We need some blood and guts senators. We need senators with no sense of job secuirty.
They are 2 parts of the same issue, imo.
Those protestors in Phoenix today signed a bunch of death warrants for their amigos today....nearly all the public safety officers in several counties were starting to grill their holiday barbeques when they were all called in.
Expect to see a lot more dead hombres in the desert.
And if they lose? Then the country move left politically and the left is emboldened. The right looks impotent. We're on the virge of building a generational majority in the country. Because we're not deporting Mexicans to want to throw all of that away. Sweet, dude. But just be sure you know what you're getting with Pelosi.
Maybe the remaining Repubs in office will re-grow some testicles until we can regain the House?
If we lose the House we lose on the border. Hastert and Sessions are the ones with their fingers in the dike. Frist and Bush are in line with the Democrats and McCain/Kennedy/Hagel/Martinez.
LOL! Maybe we should start a third party for naughty-boy 'conservatives' who are all about immigration and not a whole lot else. They'll be the NBCs (naughty boy conservatives). Gay nativists. Sounds saucy.
We don't have the luxury of a double option. President Bush isn't going to listen to the polls or his constituents on border issues. He believes that he is enlightened and we are ignorant.
