G.O.P. Sets Aside Work on Immigration

WASHINGTON, Sept. 4 — As they prepare for a critical pre-election legislative stretch, Congressional Republican leaders have all but abandoned a broad overhaul of immigration laws and instead will concentrate on national security issues they believe play to their political strength.

With Congress reconvening Tuesday after an August break, Republicans in the House and Senate say they will focus on Pentagon and domestic security spending bills, port security legislation and measures that would authorize the administration’s terror surveillance program and create military tribunals to try terror suspects.

“We Republicans believe that we have no choice in the war against terror and the only way to do it is to continue to take them head-on whether it is in Iraq or elsewhere,” said Representative John A. Boehner of Ohio, the majority leader.

It would be even smarter to go into the elections as the party that is for enforcement and border security. Any program to allow uneducated low-skilled workers into this country should be opened up to the whole world, and only to those who apply legally for it, not to just that nation that by happenstance is on our border and decides to send their poor across.

Of course, we don't need any more low-skilled workers with tons of kids to put in our schools, so there would be no such program. But if there were one, it should be universally available. Saying that you can stay here if you manage to sneak across illegally is just insane, and saying that we can't do anything about it once they have is false and defeatist. Employer sanctions, detention of illegals caught, shipping them back and not enforcing the border, all those over time will eliminate all but a few of the illegals. Some can hide in the hollows, live in tents and sneak day labor here and there, but that is not the problem. People working for $6/hour doing construction jobs that our people will do IS the problem. People bringing whole families here, using schools and social services while paying no taxes IS the problem. People creating a mini-Mexico inside our inner cities, where English is not spoken and assimilation is not taught IS the problem. 50 Million new Democrat voters over the next 20 years IS the problem.

If only those at the top of the GOP could see that. They are trying to commit suicide, and we are trying to stop them. If we succeed, there is a chance we can stop this insanity before it ruins the conservative movement for all time. If not, enjoy your century in the wilderness, fellow conservatives.

Hey all you conservatives who vow not to show up in November because you're mad about immigration: Here's your treat if you show up. If you stay home and let Pelosi and co. takeover, when we incorporate Mexico into the United States and declare our official language Spanish and Arabic, don't come crying back at FR. If you show up and the GOP wins, you'll have a real legitimate position from which to vouch for really tough legislation. And you'll probably get it. But don't even think about bawling about "border security=national security" if you're willing to let the Dems screw everything up.

Andrew Sullivan is a whack job. The gay European pothead has nothing to add to our movement, he's way off the reservation, it's time to excommunicate.

If true, this is somewhat disappointing on the one hand. It would have been great to see immigration reform be part of the debate for the November election. If the House intends on pushing for passage of HR4437 after the election, okay. However, any effort to stall enforcement only legislation after the election, will be met with fierce opposition from conservatives.

Maybe I should qualify my statement, I will only stay home if there are no third party candidates who are conservative. If not, I will not validate a con-artist who has lied one too many times but still expects people to believe him. Do you admire the Iraqis who went out to the polls and voted for Saddam despite the fact he was the only one on the ballot. I feel WE are currently given one option at the ballot box. You can vote for the liar who wants a bigger government, open borders and less sovereignty with an R after his name or the one with the D after his name. We can agree to disagree on this issue but I for one will not rubber stamp these people through. I don't think it is cowardly or childish I see it as principled

BTW Would you put a sign in your front yard supporting the candidate that wants to put a homeless shelter next door.

That is ridiculous. You think it's bad now? Now it's just the Latinos. Pelosi and Murtha would love to bring Arabs into the country in the name of chic multiculturalism. But you? You don't care! You're a man of principle! Principle, dammit! I'm staying home, kicking back, having a beer, and watching those RINO demons lose!

People already trust Republicans on the WOT than the Dims.

So why focus on immigration, which is divisive, and confused, and won't be sorted out by election day?

Play to your strengths; remind voters why they should have Republicans in office.

"The difference between you and me is that I don't see a difference between the R and D. Pelosi, Spector, Kennedy, it's all the same to me."

Then you, my friend, aren't paying attention. There's a war going on and either you're with us or you're with the terrorists. Got it?

You are right, the senate sees itself as the "smart" part of government.

They are still infested with the trent lott go along to get along mentality of the 1970's.

We need some blood and guts senators. We need senators with no sense of job secuirty.

If we show up and the GOP wins they will once and for all know that they can do what ever they want. They will no longer fear the base. There will be no chance of ever getting back to smaller govt., individual responsibility, and patriotic pride in the exceptionalism of America.

Those protestors in Phoenix today signed a bunch of death warrants for their amigos today....nearly all the public safety officers in several counties were starting to grill their holiday barbeques when they were all called in.

Expect to see a lot more dead hombres in the desert.

And if they lose? Then the country move left politically and the left is emboldened. The right looks impotent. We're on the virge of building a generational majority in the country. Because we're not deporting Mexicans to want to throw all of that away. Sweet, dude. But just be sure you know what you're getting with Pelosi.

If you see no difference between the political parties, I think you are letting anger blind you.

The rest of your post is mostly silliness.

Do I admire the Iraqis that voted for Saddam when he was the only one on the ballot? The people who voted for Saddam, like the people who vote for Castro, like the people who voted for the various Soviet leaders for years, did not have the option to stay home. Elections in those places were shams. Elections in the United States still have consequences. That is why it is cowardly to refuse to participate.

If we lose the House, we'll still have the Senate and hopefully a President Bush veto.

Maybe the remaining Repubs in office will re-grow some testicles until we can regain the House?

If we lose the House we lose on the border. Hastert and Sessions are the ones with their fingers in the dike. Frist and Bush are in line with the Democrats and McCain/Kennedy/Hagel/Martinez.

"Republicans need to be punished"

Why do I not trust Andrew Sullivan, especially on anything to do with conservatism? Anyway, he just likes the idea of "punishment" because it gets him all excited..........(oh, you naughty boys, Andrew will have to "punish" you!!)

I believe we would be getting a whack job that will be unveiled for all to see. I believe we would get the house back in 4 years. It is a volatile world and any tremor anywhere would spook folks back to their senses.

LOL! Maybe we should start a third party for naughty-boy 'conservatives' who are all about immigration and not a whole lot else. They'll be the NBCs (naughty boy conservatives). Gay nativists. Sounds saucy.

Polls indicate BOTH would be good issues. Why not have two good, easy to understand issues?

We don't have the luxury of a double option. President Bush isn't going to listen to the polls or his constituents on border issues. He believes that he is enlightened and we are ignorant.
