BERLIN, Sept. 4 (Xinhua) -- German Chancellor Angela Merkel said there is "no military option" for handling Iran's nuclear program, her spokesman told reporters here on Monday.
"The chancellor has expressed the view that there is no military option," Ulrich Wilhelm said, adding that "the door for negotiations remains open."
The U.S. leaders have said repeatedly any option would not be ruled out in dealing with Iran's nuclear program as they insist that Iran is developing nuclear weapons.
But Iran has said its program is for peaceful purpose, refusing to comply with a UN directive that it cease uranium enrichment by Aug. 31.
Senior diplomats from Britain, France and Germany will meet their counterparts from the United States, Russia and China in Berlin on Thursday to discuss the Iranian nuclear crisis.
European Union chief diplomat Javier Solana is expected to hold talks with Iranian negotiators this week. Enditem
Good to know we can depend on our friends.
fair weather
She knows that either Israel or the US will take care of the problem, so why say otherwise. Typical European.
(No more Olmert! No more Kadima! No more Oslo! )
Fine, but what, precisely, do they intend to talk about? Iran will have nuclear weapons. If the only issue is what the Germans will give them anyway, then why negotiate at all?
Wow, has Europe become neutered, or what? I'm almost certain that Japan would have taken some sort of action against N. Korea by now if we didn't impose so many restrictions on them after WWII.
Down the road what this means is: We know we had better not attack you. Therefore you get the bomb and we negotiate what we have to do so that you won't attack us with that bomb.
"Fine, but what, precisely, do they intend to talk about? Iran will have nuclear weapons." particularily if germany sells them more technology.
If they all continue to talk, sure as tomorrow morning Iran will be fully armed. Then, possibly, there will be no tomorrow.
Why do we spend time and energy, not to mention money to bribe ("incentive")? One way or another, they'll get nuclear ability. Those money to bribe perhaps will be better spent to develop a good defense system that will protect US, and perhaps some allies. If the EU wants to keep bribing people, let them do that.
You ain't seen nothing yet. Think about how they will roll over to Iran once Iran does get the bomb.
Forgot another point: if we're still concerned that a rouge country may develop nuclear weapon, just bomb the reactor at the end, the way Israel did to Iraq.
Tragically funny.
They don't want to blow their bunker business since Iraq is no longer paying.
They are still smarting from WWII. Will they support a boycott of Iranian oil and support sanctions?
WWII ended 60 years ago. Angela Merkel was born in 1954. They better figure it out soon.
You are exactly right. Israel will never allow Iran to have the bomb regardless of what Kofi, Mark Malloch-Brown, Russia, China and the euroweenies say.
