40% Say Presidential Bid Will Boost N.M. (Richardson)
The Albuquerque Journal ^ | September 4, 2006 | Trip Jennings

Twice as many New Mexicans surveyed in a new Journal poll think the prospect of Gov. Bill Richardson running for president would benefit the state than those who don't.

And many simply shrugged.

Forty percent said it would be a good thing for New Mexico.

Eighteen percent said it would be a bad thing.

And 36 percent said it wouldn't matter.

Richardson, a former congressman, United Nations ambassador and energy secretary, is considering a run for the Democratic presidential nomination in 2008, after seeking re-election as governor this year. He's already testing the waters in New Hampshire and other states.

The Journal poll asked registered voters statewide, "If Bill Richardson were to run for president, do you think it would be good for New Mexico, bad for New Mexico or would it not matter?"

While nearly a third of the voters didn't seem to get too worked up about the idea, only 6 percent were undecided. But the largest chunk of voters— the 40 percent— said it would be a good thing.

"I think people get a kick when they see their U.S. senator or governor on 'Meet the Press' or CNN," said Brian Sanderoff, president of Research & Polling Inc., whose Aug. 25 through Aug. 31 survey has a margin of error of plus or minus 5 percentage points.

"New Mexicans are proud of the fact that we have people with celebrity status," Sanderoff said.

Forty-seven percent of the Democrats polled viewed a presidential run by the governor as helpful to the state, compared to 31 percent of Republicans.

Democrats and Republicans were about equal in the numbers saying it just wouldn't matter.

Ah, the key to any political poll is how the question is asked: Yes, no, don't matter, don't care.

In his poll on who would you vote for governor, Sanderoff should have asked the question the same way: Richardson, Dendahl, don't matter, don't care. It would be interesting to see those results from NM sheeple.

More than two years ago I said that Richardson will be in a ticket. I see him in a ticket with Hitlery. One more reason to vote Republican in 2006 and 2008.

If by boosting they mean having a nut jub associated with the state in the public mind, then yes this will be a boost.

Rather than running a poll on local races for 2006, they decided to run a poll to say it's OK for Richardson to run for president.

Never ceases to amaze me.

Of course, he'll be running for Vice President, in reality, but that's a minor point.

While I considered him a threat when combined with a Bayh or a Warner on the top of the ticket a while ago, immigration became the number 1 issue and he would sink the dems. * years from now that will no longer be the case as red states get more hispanic (SW, Colorado, etc...)

"Forty percent said it would be a good thing for New Mexico."
