The God Bless America poster that used to hang in the Lompoc post office lobby is now in the back room out of public view.
That's the way Lompoc resident Matt Hughes likes it.
Hughes, a vocal atheist and advocate for the separation of church and state, was offended by the sign and complained to the postmaster, who ordered it taken down last month.
The red, white and blue poster has a large American flag above the words God Bless America.
Post office employees were as offended as Hughes, not by the poster but by the postmaster's decision.
We're just upset and we're offended that we can't show support for our country, said Cathy Hefferman, lobby director at the post office. This is a time that you need to do that.
Hefferman said Hughes had every right to ask that the sign be taken down. But she said postal employees had a right to be able to keep the poster where they work.
Hughes disagreed.
They posted a religious expression, in this case, a prayer, and it's not the business of our government to be promoting religion, Hughes said. That's the business of our churches.
The poster had been hanging on a wall above the customer service area since 2001. It was placed there, where clerks accept packages from customers, shortly after the Sept. 11 terrorist attacks.
Hughes said a supervisor's initial response to his request was resistant.
I first spoke to a supervisor who told me, It's not coming down,' Hughes said. He refused and said That's not coming down. You can complain to Washington if you want, but it's not coming down.'
Several days later, Hughes discovered that it had been taken down.

I've been getting an e-mail from various friends (it seems to be a popular suggestion) suggesting everyone purchase a rubber stamp with "God Bless America" on it to be used on all US Mail. Hubby and I agree it will be done by this household.
Why do I get the feeling that these "committed" atheists will be the first in line to convert to full-on jihadist islam if and when the hajis take over in America?

If I worked there I would wear a U.S. Flag button with God Bless American across the flag.
I can recall that some 45 years ago, an atheist group in Tucson was complaining that the city had to force the churches and synagogues in town to remove their religious symbols visible from taxpayer supported and government owned roadways as their right to "freedom from religion" was being infringed on by their having to pass by houses of worship to get to work or other destinations. They had a lovely time beating on their chests in the letters to the editor, council meeting and other forums until they were basically told to shut up. That was another time and place than this.

I don't believe there is a constitutional prohibition against "being offended" written anywhere in the Constitution.

What utter bullshit. The postmaster is a wuss; the "offended party" is a miserable piece of whining whale excrement.
Sorry Lib, but stabbing someone in the chest with a sword does not equal the subtlety of asswhuppin.............Besides, then we get into the problem of one-up-manship. Meaning, you draw the sword, I draw the 9-mm....... (works for me tho, I'm all for it!) :)

Also, if there's anything else hanging around that place, then that religious expression was just one of many.
Next time you go in there and see the postmaster, tell him how offended you are since he's apparently a hypocrite by giving in and removing the poster, yet at the same time has the audacity to cash his government check.
