Now that is a good title.

Germany immediately announced they are annexing the Sea of Tranquility, while France raised a white flag in triumph.

LOL! When you screw up, just pretend that's the way it was planned.

First European spacecraft to moon makes planned crash landing on lunar surface. "Aahhhh, I meant to do that."

There are some negative comments on this thread.
They planned the crash and figured out a way to get some good data. What's the beef?

OSHA was contacted and the moon was deemed hazardous. EPA is doing a $650 million study to determine the scope of the cleanup effort.

Isn't the title pretty misleading? You'd think they could fit the word "planned" in the title. You see the title, and you're thinking, oh no the spacecraft crash landed. Then you read the article and you see they meant to do that.
To: Lunatic Fringe
Did they at least have any video of the descent?

A couple years back I had read articles about joint "space" programs between France and Russia. I wonder if this was one such joint project.

Interesting. We did that with the Ranger program, and it appears that the Soviets did the same with their "Luna" program, but those were long ago indeed:

Good mission. This is the first, but ESA will be sending many more. Eventually it will lead to a lunar colony.
