CA: Analysis: Governor riding high after deals with Democrats
Sac Bee ^ | 9/2/06 | Kevin Yamamura

After trailing all summer in the governor's contest, Democratic contender Phil Angelides described himself this week as a championship boxer eyeing a comeback in the closing rounds.

But while Angelides tried to muster enthusiasm for his fight against Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger, Democratic legislators huddled in the governor's corner to strike a global warming deal that gave the Republican his most significant election-year accomplishment.

The timing seemed particularly bad for Angelides. As he focused this week on linking the governor with President Bush, the greenhouse gas reduction plan was widely portrayed as a Schwarzenegger snub of the Bush administration on an environmental issue popular among Californians.

The agreement capped a final legislative month in which Assembly Speaker Fabian Núñez and Senate President Pro Tem Don Perata, both Democrats, struck deals with the governor to raise the minimum wage to $8 per hour and lower the cost of prescription drugs for the poor and uninsured.

Heading into the unofficial Labor Day kickoff to the campaign season, Schwarzenegger is trying to broaden his appeal to moderate voters while Angelides needs to first shore up support from the 42 percent of Democrats who have not committed to him, according to a Public Policy Institute of California poll released Wednesday.

Democratic lawmakers did approve bills Schwarzenegger will veto based on philosophical differences, but the governor seemed to avoid some of the most politically sticky ones, which died before reaching his desk.

--snip--

"Angelides right now is pretty much standing alone out there," said Larry Gerston, a San Jose State University professor of political science. "Democrats in the Legislature have decided that while they're not going to say (Angelides) is expendable, they're getting so many of their immediate needs met right now that this is what they have to do."

Ahnuld may be the best conservatives can hope for in a state that has already tipped demographically into what looks like a permanent Democrat stronghold.

No need to rehash that debate now, but things could be worse for California conservatives. And probably will be, ultimately.

Why change horses in midstream? Arnold gave them nearly everything on their wish list. Angelides is now wishing he had a REAL conservative to run against.

(No more Olmert! No more Kadima! No more Oslo! )

Any pretense of the GUb being conservative was quickly dashed when he borrowed 15 billion to bail the dems out and let them off the hook, and then continued the rush to spend at a sustained rate of 10% plus hikes in the state budget since he was sworn in.

Agreed... they bear the burden of blame just as President Bush does for everything wrong in the world..

The only path left is to go our own way,, the 2 party system is effectively broken at both a state and federal level. PC rules the day and we all pay dearly as a result on any number of social issues. The conservative movement is not dead, just under attack from the left and mushy middle-of-the-road moderates.

Platforms mean little to nothing for many in power today, only retaining and acquiring more power satisfies them.

I'll get ripped for saying that, but So what else is new? ;-)

Ca conservatives have a problem and that is little or no support from national Republicans. You have to have a conservative message and alternative to change minds. Right now it is as if they have given up. You have to target catch phrases and leverage a block of ignorant public independents in order to win in places like CA. You can't do that by playing nice with Democrats. You can't do that by meeting them halfway. You need to not appologize like Senator Allen did here in VA, I don't know who his campaign managers are but they should be shot. He should've came out and said people upset about nonsense words are full for Maccaca. Dumb *** republican wussies getting trumped by bigger Democrat wussies. You can't win that game. Where is John Wayne when we need him?

Worse than an $8 per hour minimum wage deal is the mini
Kyoto agreement signed by Arnold. That could effectively kill off any new industry in California. At least it's going to
be a huge tax on these industries.

Wacked out, totally!

Hopefully, the California Republicans will leave, move to Oregon, and give the right an edge in the next election.

The way out is for you folks in CA to use the Republic as it was intended. Move to a state where your vote matters and your ideology is respected. Do this before the next census and bankrupt the CA electoral college.
