As you probably already know, Iranian president Mahmood Ahmadinejad has started a weblog in Farsi, English, Arabic and French. This led me to lookup the whois-record of his domain name, ahmadinejad.ir.
There's something strange here. While the first name of the Iranian president is "Mahmoud", the domain registration says "Mahdi". In Islamic eschatology, the Mahdi is the prophesied redeemer of Islam, who will change the world into a perfect Islamic society before the end of times. It is well known that Ahmadinejad is a strong believer in the return of the Mahdi. But isn't this registration a strong indication that he (or his staff) believes that he himself is the Mahdi?

Not quite the way I understand it. My understanding is that he sees himself as the prime mover in creating the conditions of chaos and destruction that they believe precede the coming of the Mahdi, and thus accelerate that coming. For example, he is said to have dropped the names of his cabinet members down the well where the Mahdi is supposed to be hiding; there'd be no point in that if he considered himself to be the Mahdi.

Just speculating...but I would think that if he really believes the mahdi is coming, that he would be preparing everything for the mahdi. So setting up the domain name under mahdi's name would imply that he is preparing to turn it over to the mahdi for the mahdi's use when he appears. my two cents...well ok maybe 1/2 cent

Amr son of Shamer quoted Jabir, who quoted Mohammed bin Ali to have said:
For our Mahdi, there are two signs. Since the birth of Universe, these events have never taken place. Those two signs are that there will be Lunar Eclipse on the first night of Ramadhan and Solar Eclipse in the middle of Ramadhan.

To use a Ghost Busters analogy, I believe he is the "Keymaster." The mahdi would be "Gatekeeper."

Which means he must die.

Mahmood Ahmadinejad CANNOT be the mahdi - he fails the very first descriptive below -- He will be TALL!
http://www.islam.tc/prophecies/imam.html
His Features:
Hadhrat Abu Saeed Khudri (R.A.) relates that Rasulullah (Sallallahu Alayhi Wasallam) said, "Al Mahdi will be from my progeny. His forehead will be broad and his nose will be high. He will fill the world with justice and fairness at a time when the world will be filled with oppression. He will rule for seven years."
Other ahadeeth inform us that:
* He will be tall
* He will be fair complexioned
* His facial features will be similar to those of Rasulullah (Sallallahu Alayhi Wasallam)
* His character will be exactly like that of Rasulullah (Sallallahu Alayhi Wasallam)
* His father's name will be Abdullah
* His mother's name will be Aamina
* He will speak with a slight stutter and occasionally this stutter will frustrate him causing him to hit his hand upon his thigh.
* His age at the time of his emergence will be forty years
* He will receive Knowledge from Allah.

Mahdi must die ? Maybe? Maybe not?
this also of interest .... (no I am defintely NOT muslim)
It get's a bit more confusing here ....
Please do not confuse Imam Mahdi with Hadhrat Isa (Jesus) Alayhis Salaam. They are two different persons, and both will come during the last days. According to Hadeeth, Imam Mahdi will appear first, and Hadhrat Isa (A.S.) will appear during Imam Mahdi's lifetime.
Furthermore, only Hadhrat Isa (Jesus) (A.S.) will be able to kill Dajjal (the "anti-Christ").
