Five file paperwork to run in special election to temporarily fill DeLay's House seat
HOUSTON (AP) - Five people filed the necessary paperwork by Friday's afternoon deadline to run in the special election to temporarily fill the seat vacated by former House Majority leader Tom DeLay, according to the secretary of state's Office.
Gov. Rick Perry this week ordered the Nov. 7 special election to temporarily replace DeLay, who resigned in June although his term doesn't expire until January. The general election is also on Nov. 7.
Houston City Councilwoman Shelley Sekula-Gibbs, whom Republicans have chosen to support as a write-in candidate in the general election, was one of the five candidates for the special election.
The other four are: retired Air Force Maj. Don Richardson of Houston, a Republican; Hoa Tran Giannibecego, a Houston doctor who filed as a Republican; Steve Stockman, a one-term southeast Texas congressman who was elected during the 1994 Republican sweep of state offices; and Bob Smither, who is also running as the Libertarian candidate in the general election. Richardson is also a write-in candidate in the general election. Stockman failed earlier this year to gather enough signatures to run as an independent candidate in the general election.
Nick Lampson, the Democratic candidate for DeLay's seat, has said he will not run in the special election but instead focus his attention on the general election.
DeLay did not research the law before he jumped out of the frying pan.
Sekula-Gibbs must now show people how to write her name in the regular election: no easy task.
It could be much worse.... Hoa Tran Giannibecego is running.
Interesting name..... Italiovietnameese?
Do you think she would rather lose than simplify? I cannot imagine her pulling that out in this Democrat year.
I think it would be simpler to vote for the same candidate for both offices rather than 1 and 1. So it's not simpler to run for one and not the other, especially if you're a write-in.
Do I understand correctly that the 5 names will be on the ballot for the special election? Then spelling the name correctly for the general election shouldn't be as big of an issue.
