A Sore (Loser) That Won't Heal
Investor's Business Daily ^ | 2 September 2006 | Staff

Latin America: Bitterly refusing to concede the presidential election he lost, Andres Manuel Lopez Obrador vows to destabilize Mexico as payback for his defeat. The government will have to deal with him firmly.

And that's a shame, because the final call, set for Sept. 6, on Mexico's July 2 presidential election should be pure celebration. The country should rightly recognize its free and fair vote, its emerging new parties and its solid institutions — all of which have come about in a mere decade of democracy from a one-party state — and winner Felipe Calderon should be able to begin his term Dec. 1 unfettered by controversy.

Instead, Lopez Obrador, steeped in the victim mentality, plans to set up a "parallel government," pretending to rule Mexico as sort of a gypsy president and imagining himself a new Benito Juarez, ruling on the lam, eluding French troops. Only Lopez Obrador's fight is not with 19th-century imperialists, but with Mexico's voters.

It's easy to dismiss his plan as quixotic, yet there's reason for worry. Lopez Obrador is a die-hard who's starting to resemble the peculiar character of Bolivia's president, Evo Morales. For 10 years, Morales struggled to win elections before he finally emerged victorious in December. Among factors contributing to his victory was voter loathing of his unending protests.

Morales' supporters blocked roads, hurled dynamite, sealed off cities and destroyed trade. Morales grew so intolerable that many Bolivians threw up their hands and reasoned: "Just give him the vote; let him see if he can ride the government tiger himself."

Unfortunately the general corruption of politics and business down there has made it very lucrative to be in power. In that case it's hard to buy someone like that off.

Not unlike the childish, churlish behavior of polticians in our country. I suppose now they will get the idea that this is something they should do every time they are not happy with the results of an election.

In the meantime, we are being attacked fron without and within and few in DC seem to be making that a priority.

When will the Republicans that we elected start standing up and behaving like the team in power? perhaps we deserve what is coming down the pike -

Looks like our Democrats have started a 'reverse invasion' of Mexico from the north... They've penetrated Mexican society and infused it with their values and customs.

Obrador has obviously taken a lesson from the American Democrat Party.

Fourth, any overseas sources of funding for the Lopez Obrador party must be tracked down. If someone is paying to destabilize Mexico, then cutting off any such funding will be key.

Isn't that George Soro's specialty?

Fifth, international support could help. Maybe Al Gore, who also lost an election by a narrow electoral margin, can be persuaded to urge Lopez Obrador to concede and respect Mexico's institutions.

Gore??? Hell, Gore's apt to bring the infection back with him!

Palmer, This could be said of the U.S. politics also. I've never thought about the simularities before.

This is interesting. 50% of the Mexican population could conceivably just stop working and force a change in a valid, democratic result. George Soros, you are nuts but I got to hand it too you, this one is politically brilliant.

Obragore is like Algore magnified by 10. His politics would take Mexico back a hundred years. Imagine illegal immigration if had won or manages to coup?

My worry is that Obrador is doing the very tactics that could lead to civil war, just like what happened in the USA in 1860 to 1861.

Imagine illegal immigration if had won or manages to coup?

But this time a huge fraction of the illegals will be educated workers and managers (many of whom are literate in English). It'll be like the Cuban migration to Florida of the early 1960's all over again....

Leftist vows to destabilize Mexico as payback for his defeat.

Typical third world banana republic -- that would never happen here.

Oh wait . . . it did . . .twice . . . never mind.

I agree he's got to go, but if Fox tries to put a lid on him, it'll likely blow up.

Lopez Obrador, steeped in the victim mentality, plans to set up a "parallel government,"

Isn't that just duckie. Maybe it's best to let AMLO blow himself up.

It may be a warning sign of corruption when politicians stop conceding elections and keep contesting them forever. I always thought our corruption was more ideological, e.g. keeping the supreme court and state dept full of globalists. I'm not sure if we have more than the usual amount of cash corruption yet.

The article suggested that Al Gore convince him to step aside. Yeah, that'll work. Al himself still thinks he's the President

Al Gore beat this guy by 6 years on how to deny losing an election. And recently John Kerry joined this group of sour grapes politicians.Nowadays if a candidate doesn't win by a landslide the loser automaticlly cry's vote fraud. It happens in Mexico and it happens right here in the USA !!!

I think it's Hugo Chavez.

Meanwhile, I think Bore could raise his stature if he told AMLO to knock it off and accept the result and be a good sport like he (comparatively) was. What is the chance of that? 000000000001.% I am sure!!!
