High-ranking Norte Valle drug cartel fugitive arrested by ICE
Jaime Maya-Duran to be arraigned in the Eastern District Court of NY
NEW YORK, NY - On September 6, 2006, ICE agents arrested Jaime Maya-Duran, a high ranking member of the Norte Valle Cartel in Colombia, upon his arrival in JFK International Airport. The arrest followed Maya-Duran’s apprehension in Mexico City. The Norte Valle Cartel is reportedly responsible for the trafficking of more than 50 percent of the cocaine that is smuggled out of Colombia and destined for the United States and Europe.
New York ICE Special Agent-in-Charge Martin D. Ficke commented, “Public safety is a national priority for ICE and a concern of every American. With the arrest of Maya-Duran, we have weakened this crime organization that thrives on violence and that threatens the welfare of our children.” He added, “We will not rest until all of the members of the Norte Valle Cartel are behind bars and their illegal enterprises have been shut down.”
The ICE New York El Dorado Task Force has an on-going investigation into the illegal activities of this crime organization and will be presenting Maya-Duran to the U.S. Attorney’s Office in the Eastern District of New York for arraignment. In 2003, Maya-Duran was indicted in the Eastern District Court of New York on narcotics trafficking and money laundering charges. As a result of these indictments, a provisional arrest warrant was issued.
