BRITISH police are currently trying to monitor "thousands" of potential security suspects, the head of the anti-terrorism unit at London's Metropolitan Police said in an interview to be broadcast on Sunday.
In an interview recorded in July, before the arrest of more than two dozen people on suspicion of an alleged plot to blow up US-bound aircraft, Peter Clarke said Britain was facing an increasing threat from home grown extremists.
He refused to give an exact figure about how many people he said were either directly or indirectly involved in plotting atrocities on British soil but said the number ran into four figures.
"I don't want to go down the numbers game, I don't think it's helpful," he told a BBC programme entitled Al-Qaida - Time to Talk?, to be shown Sunday evening.
"All I can say is that our knowledge is increasing and certainly in terms of broad description, the numbers of people who we have to be interested in are into the thousands."

I don't see how it can work in perpetuity, with a problem that big. At some point, western nations are going to have to face facts with I-slam and either submit to it, ban it, or there is a tiny chance they might could devise some tolerable version of it and ban all others. In the US we'd have to start with heaving all wahhabi religios officials and that would pretty much include all immams and all present religious officials. That I see as the minimum we might could get by with.

Don't know the population in Great Britain but would guess 100 million or less. So we must be monitoring 50 thousand.
Can't. We have the ACLU and the New York Times. The Brits suspended all kinds of civil liberties during WWII, and they will do so again. They will conquer the terrorists in their country.
That would be a good start, but we will never do it. We would rather die than be called racists. Our politicians quake in their boots thinking about actually having to tackle this problem. Look how well they are doing with immigration.

Once Islam reaches a critical mass inside a country, a "liberal democracy" cannot defeat terrorism as long as liberals, leftists, and socialists are in charge.
What happens when there are more "security suspects" than police? This is a military tactic known as "swarming".
To defeat terrorism Western democracies will have to undergo dramatic and painful change. Because 20% of the population will always side with the "enemy" it will be a homeland war on two fronts as well as multiple theatres overseas.
Too bad they can't just kick them out of the country. But I suppose it's better to have them where they can be watched.
