CHICAGO (Reuters) - American Muslims still face high levels of hatred and suspicion nearly five years after the September 11 attacks and political leaders and the news media are mostly to blame, Muslim leaders said on Friday.
"During the last five years the Muslim community has been scrutinized by almost all branches of the government and the media to the extent that more than half a million Muslims have been directly touched by this process," said Abdul Malik Mujahid, chairman of the Council of Islamic Organizations of Greater Chicago.
"They continue to face dehumanization and a great trend of Islamophobia," he added, speaking to reporters at the start of the annual meeting of the Islamic Society of North America, the largest yearly gathering of U.S. and Canadian Muslims.
"The trends of Islamophobia unfortunately are worsening," he added, blaming "television driven by media makers" and political leaders for the situation.
The September 11 attacks, planned by the al Qaeda group of Osama bin Laden, were carried out by Islamic men flying hijacked planes into the World Trade center in New York and the Pentagon outside Washington.
Mujahid cited President George W. Bush's recent remark that if terrorism is not beaten in Baghdad then Americans will have to fight it in their own streets as a remark that casts suspicions on Muslims in their own country.
Ingrid Mattson, newly elected president of ISNA and the first woman to head the group, agreed about the continuing level of problems faced by Muslims but said there was also a growing level of education and understanding across "civil society" that finds Muslim leaders sometimes hard pressed to keep up with demands for speeches and other outreach opportunities.
Hollywood and popular culture in general, she added, seem to have done a better job of putting a human face on Muslim adherents than the news media.
Until Muslim leaders (the one that they regard as leaders, not 'laymen') speak up and condemn Islamic terrorism without any "BUT", then I don't see how 'Islamophobia' declines. And it's justified.

Well, as a famous American once observed, "Facts are stubborn things."

After five years, they have the weaselsprach down pat. What's missing is when Muslim leaders tell their communities, "What have we done to make Americans hate us so much?"
"Not all Muslims are terrorists, but all the terrorists are Muslim."
PLK, even that's not right.
There are non-Muslim terrorists. eg. the IRA, letwing groups in Europe like Red Army in 1970s, Columbian rebels, the Black Panthers, the KKK.
... but, none of the above had widespread support among religious leaders! Muslim clerics seem to have a problem rejecting Muslim terrorism, and some extremist mullahs and clerics openly call for it as a form of "jihad".
So an amendment:
"Not all Muslims are terrorists, and not all the terrorists are Muslim. But Islam is the only major religion where many of its leaders and devoted followers tolerate - and in some cases advocate - extremist terrorist violence among its adherents. "
With me, it's not really Islamophobia. It's just that I can't picture myself wearing a burqa, leading a camel around and carring a prayer rug and Koran. I'd feel really goofy.
Not to worry, Centanni and Wiig have been converted. The media has now paid the ransom dhimmi tax, and are ramming peaceful islam down our throats. They have not seen a backlash yet.

This afternoon I had to pick up a few items from a supermarket near my workplace, which happens also to be a very large Muslim neighborhood. My husband, a rabbi, looks like the typical stereotypical Jew: beard, black suit, etc.
He parked the car next to a hijab woman who was loading her groceries. She took one look at him and FREAKED OUT, shoved her kids into the car and took off like a rocket.
Right now she must be electrifying her friends and relatives with the story of her narrow escape from a real live JEW in the parking lot of her local [Muslim neighborhood] supermarket.
Keep an eye on the enemy within. Hitler is alive and well and living in the Muslim Nation.
Perhaps Gov Rick Perry, TX, in attending the dedication ceremony of a new mosque in Plano last week, was trying to persuade people that islam is a ROP. Nobody's buying it.
My advice to Abdul Malik Mujahid is to go to youe mosque and kick your immam in the ass and tell him to figjt for America insted of appeasing the Shia
