AWOL Soldier Refuses to Return to Iraq
Democracy Now ^

Posted on 09/01/2006 10:39:19 AM PDT by stm

We hear from a soldier who is refusing to fight in Iraq. Mark Wilkerson has been AWOL for more than a year and is turning himself in at Fort Hood in Texas today. In a taped video statement he says, "I am not willing to kill or be killed for something I don't believe in. My morals said going to Iraq was not the right thing to do." I was not going to live a life of violence." [includes rush transcript]

It probably didn't occur to this Einstein when they taught him how to use a rifle in basic that even cooks have to use them.

"It's better to not have "soldiers" like this over in Iraq or Afganistan anyway. They might get a real hero killed by their pacifism."

They can always stay back at the CP and fill sandbags.

He probably wasn't smart enough to get into the AF.

We only took the really smart and cool guys for the social club.

Did anybody else notice he is wearing a yellow shirt?

And what's in the bag?

"They can always stay back at the CP and fill sandbags."

There is no choice and it shouldn't be accomadated.
You sign up, you kill. Simple as that.
Otherwise, don't sign up.
We need to book mark this guy and check on him 5 years from now to see how he fared. Biiiiiiiiiiiiig mistake.

"Grandpa, when you were in the war, what did you do?"
"I didn't."

The volunteer military was supposed to keep out cowards like this because it was assumed that someone with minimal intelligence would know what joining the Army might entail. We need to make a point regarding what happens to people too stupid to circulate in civil society.

This punk is not AWOL - after 30 days he is a deserter.

He deserves the "Patton treatment" decribed in this thread.

Back in those times, this kind of behavior would be not be tolerated. A deserter would be summarily shot. We're too soft.

Yellow fits him perfectly. He's a disgrace to the uniform and and a dishonorable putak. If I were a Klingon, I'd disembowel him where he stood for dishonoring the Way Of The Warrior.

Hmmmm, the Army's job description is "to kill people and break things" and he didn't think that sounded just a TAD violent when he signed up?

And if they still did that there would be none of this nonsense.

Do your time in and get out man. You may..You will find out more about yourself than you could ever imagine if you just completed your service.

Although, I am guessing he is about to find out more about himself than he ever expected but not in a good way.

Makes you wonder why a liberal peacenik would sign up for Army service in the first place.

Most of these kids have parents who have screwed with their heads as a result of Bush hatred.

I deprogrammed one, earlier this year. He has since returned to his unit and is looking forward to his next deployment, which will be Afghanistan, in a few months.

Darn shame really......but what can you do. His biggest problem was that he did not understand the reasons behind the invasion of Iraq. It seems that few do and they have been mislead by the nation's media on a daily basis...

Mind boggling. War is ugly, but its kind of late to be deciding you don't want a part of it once you are in. Jeez, I was naive too. Ended up with chronic PTSD, but deserting never came to my mind. You honor your commitment, buddy.

I recall my GF's friends (she was in college) trying to talk me out of reporting to go to Nam. I could not relate to that thinking at all.
