UNITED NATIONS, Sept. 1 (UPI) -- The International Atomic Energy Agency told the U.N. Security Council its inspectors have found new traces of enriched uranium in Iran.
The discovery marked the third instance that highly enriched uranium was found at an Iranian facility, but the IAEA said the nuclear fingerprint on the new discovery does not match that found on earlier samples, which the agency had concluded came from contaminated equipment from Pakistan, The New York Times reported Friday.
The 6-page IAEA report did not identify where the uranium might have originated or whether it was connected to a secret nuclear program in Iran. The country has insisted that its nuclear program is aimed only at producing energy, a task that would use uranium enriched at much lower levels than that found by the IAEA inspectors.
The report said that Iran was continuing to produce enriched uranium at low levels and on a small scale at its Natanz facility.
The Security Council had set Thursday as a deadline for Iran to discontinue enrichment, and a failure to comply by the country could result in economic and political penalties.
...be they for us or ag'in us? Boobs or brilliant? Rueter-like or trustworthy?
Inquiring minds want to know.
Yes, I read it. But I just reread and noticed that -- in fact -- the article did use the term "highly enriched" in the first paragraph. And the quote you used is accurate, though it also states that they are producing low levels of uranium.
I have read that Iran lacks enough gas centrifuges to generate enough highly enriched uranium for a bomb (a few kilograms are needed if I remember correctly). Anyway, good catch - I made a mistake.
Have also read that they have received the materials to produce the high capacity centrifuges for production of high grade.
Helen Thomas quit UPI years ago because she felt it was too conservative. :-)
Is it me, or is history continually repeating itself?
But I digress....
Oh C'mon! Iran is only trying to generate nuclear power.....
...just a whole lot of it....
.... all it once....
..... in an uncontrolled fashion.
This could play out in one of two ways.
1. The Iraq model...we do a preemptive strike, then everyone acts like it was unprovoked.
2. The 9/11 model
Iran uses a nuke, then libs (and the world) ask why Bush didnt prevent it.
And they are so peace minded that they are more than willing to share it with Israel as an extended olive branch of peace.
Great idea! If he comes back glowing, we'll know they have more of it and more highly enriched than we thought.
If he doesn't come back, oh well.......
"Let's put Joe Wilson on the case ..."
Do they have mint tea in Iran?
In other news, Al Gore is found unstable.
Why they bought yellow cake from Niger! Where else could they purchase uranium and then get away with lying about it.
But first Kerry's team will submit their report to the UN to be sure it passes the global test.
No no no, my friend. The EU has spoken. This is not the time for action.
Only when Israel is a Neutron plume, will the 'world' take action. It will be in the manner of a press release condemning the action, but the subterfuge joy of the co-annihilators will be hard to suppress. Israel will be gone, millions of zionists will be detroyed, and the arab world will return to destroying themselves again and again, but with one less interloper.
This is just like the Nazis. The (Nazi-friendly) Red Cross visited one of the Nazi death camps. Prior to the visit, the Nazis had sanitized the place, fed the inmates, and made it look like it was simply a labor camp. This is what Iran is doing. They are running multiple enrichment facilities. One is for show, to pretend they are having problems and delays, while the hidden one(s) are the real deal. And if you're not sure they are doing this, can you and I afford to take a chance???

I was just reading up on this the other day. I believe that a mininmum of about 15kg is needed for an implosion type fission weapon. A 17cm (6.7 in) diameter ball of uranium weighs 50kg (110 lbs.), so I guess "low levels of uranium" is a relative term.
