Spain Agrees to 1,100 Troops for Force

MADRID, Spain (AP) - The Spanish government agreed Friday to contribute up to 1,100 troops to the strengthened U.N. peacekeeping force in Lebanon and lead one of its multinational brigades.

The decision, made at a weekly Cabinet meeting, is expected to be approved by the parliament in a Thursday vote.

Deputy Prime Minister Maria Teresa Fernandez de la Vega said that, assuming the mission is approved, Spain will immediately send marines to Lebanon. They will be replaced in November by other Spanish troops, who will take command of a multinational brigade, she said.

Defense Minister Jose Antonio Alonso is to give details of the deployment to parliament members before the vote.

The Socialist government took power in 2004 and quickly withdrew 1,300 troops from Iraq that the previous, conservative administration had sent without consulting the parliament. The administration also enacted a law requiring parliamentary approval for overseas troop deployments.

I wonder if the Hezzies will be able to resist the urge to suicide bomb these western-infidel-pigdog troops on arab lands?

By the time all these 'peace keepers' are ready to deploy, the Hezzies will be re-stocked and ready to start bombing Israel all over again. IMO

French, Spanish, Italian -- the return of the Crusaders to Lebanon? You know that's how the Hezzies will portray it.

At least they won't need to waste any time loading magazines and ammo drums. They left Iraq with every round that they went there with. The ammo should still be loaded.

Spanish troops overseen by French leadership (oxymoron?)....now there's a recipe for disaster.

Jose Antonio Alonso

How popular a name is Jose Antonio? Would this be a clue to his parents' (and perhaps his) place on the political spectrum?

What were they supposed to do? Defy their commander-in-chief?

This is a problem why? Maybe they'll finish the job this time.

Those troops aren't cowards - Zapatero ordered them home. Were they supposed to desert and form the Franco Brigades?

Here's a photo of Spanish Marines boarding a North Korean (?) freighter. I wonder how many of the keyboard cowboys on this thread have the balls to do the same?

Inverse barometer paradigm applies here. None of the contributors to this "peacekeeping force" have any regard for Israel--this is not being done for the sake of Israeli security. It is being done to protect the Lebanese terrorists, to confound and to complicate Israel's ability to respond with deadly force when attacked. This is nothing more than Olmert agreeing to put human shields into Lebanon and stabbing his own military and people in the back. Olmert is not a warrior, he is a peacenik and he will not defend Israel. His daughter Dana is barking mad left wing moonbat that actively engages in the same self hatred and self destructive activities the barking moonbats in the US engage in. She is in short a traitor who happens to be the cherished daughter of the Israeli Prime Minister.

One Blog (Atlas Shrugs) refers to Olmert as Abu Dana. A very apt nickname for this father of a deluded Jewish dhimmi.

Oh, come on! Isn't it clear that I was making a reference to the fact that the nationality of the peacekeepers is not going to play well with the locals? Sheeze!

And what do YOU mean by "finish the job?" What are YOU suggesting?

I hope so, but if they want to take a shot at Spain's worthless pinko government, they are more then welcome to.

Wow.. They captured a freighter. It must have been scary when the pipe wielding engineer screamed at them in Korean.

They probably feel guilty after pulling out of Iraq early.
