RICHMOND, Va. - A senator who had singled out an Indian man at a campaign event and referred to him as "Macaca" declined a leadership award from a minority scholarship fund Thursday after donors protested his selection.
Thurgood Marshall Scholarship Fund donors had threatened to withhold contributions if Sen. George Allen, a Republican seeking re-election this fall, received the fund's Community Leadership Award.
"The foundation told the senator that they've been catching a lot of static from members and some of their donors, and before it spins into a week of controversy, we just decided to decline it," Allen spokesman John Reid said....

And Allen keeps falling for it. How many times will he apologize for NOTHING?
George A is going to find out it is impossible to outpander to race pimp panderers...
Liberals cannot win elections based on their ideas. Therefore, they send out operatives, like the guy in this case, to follow conservative candidates around. Any perceived slip is then captured, disseminated to the MSM and beaten into the ground in an effort to paint the candidate in some sort of negative light - often as racist - which is their tired old stereotype.
Wouldn't that headline qualify as a slur as well? Would Bob Lewis decline a Pulitzer?
The media runs article upon article about the mecaca comment, which is a big nothing, but it does not even mention the anti-semitic literature used by his opponent, James Webb.
Declining a Thurgood Marshall Community Leadership Award will win more conservative votes than accepting it will win Liberal votes.
He needs to move on.
Such silliness from grown-ups.
Someone tell Allen that playing nice and contrite only works for Democrats. Because he is GOP, the media will never, ever let go of this for the rest of his life, and he better start fighting back.
He's practically lost my support, and I've been one of his biggest boosters. Sad, but politics ain't beanbag.
What a wuss.
Well put. This is the first opportunity he's had on the national stage--sure, it was a negative story, but leaders are made when they seize the moment, not when they have everything set up just nice and neat. Their mettle is tested by circumstances, and how they handle these circumstances tells us how he will lead.
His first opportunity to jump on every TV show and say "This is BS, and here's why," and what does he do?
"I'm sorry. I'm sorry. I'm sorry. I'm sorry."
People around here have been telling me how great this guy is, but based on this, how is he going to deal with a terrorist attack or a SCOTUS pick? So many whine about W, but if THIS is their idea of a "real" conservative leader, then I'm laughing at them right now.
[[[ His house, in Earlysville, VA., is about 6-7 miles away from mine and I contribute cash to his campaigns.]]]
Stick a fork in him. If he doesn't understand how politics is played these days, he's nobody I want in office.
Warning to all on the right. The left monitors and records your every word, hoping to find something that they can crucify you on. If you said something that they can turn into a racist/sexist/homophobe thing, they will.
Your words can be a quotation of someone else. Doesn't matter. Your words can be a rhetorical question. Doesn't matter. Your words can be satire. The left doesn't understand satire. You're done. Your words can be a joke. The left has no sense of humor. You're done.
No kidding. One he singled him out because they little twerp works for his opposition and two, it was not a slur. Allen has been very weak.
No need to worry - Allen will easily win re-election.
Would the award be given to Robert Byrd? Hillary!? Jesse Jackson? Joe Biden? They've all made real racial slurs in their storied careers, although I believe that Biden copied his from someone else.
Allen's mistake was in not being sufficiently confrontational. Instead, he took the pussified progressive apology approach, which is red meat for the race baiters.
