United Nations chief Kofi Annan says that the deadline for Iran to freeze sensitive nuclear work had passed but that he did not think the Security Council would act immediately.
"Even though the deadline has expired, I don't think the Council is going to act tomorrow. I will need to be in touch with the players to find out how they intend to proceed," Mr Annan said.
"And I am not sure that they are ready to take the kind of action you want," he said.
"I will need further consolations with them."
The Security Council adopted a resolution last month calling on Iran to halt uranium enrichment by August 31 or risk possible sanctions, amid fears in the West its nuclear program may be a cover for efforts to build the bomb.
The so-called 5+1 - permanent Security Council members Britain, China, France, Russia and the United States plus Germany - have offered Iran a package of incentives in return for a nuclear freeze.
Asked by reporters if he expected the international community to move towards imposing sanctions on Iran, Mr Annan said: "That is an issue in the hands of the Security Council.
"Now that the deadline has passed I know that there were attempts being made to organise a meeting between Iran and the other six players. The meeting has not taken place yet."
Mr Annan, on a regional tour largely focused on underpinning the UN-brokered cease-fire in Lebanon, left Jordan for Syria and is expected in Iran on Saturday.
What a waste of space!
"action"... HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA!!! Annan, you are SUCH a waste of space. you and that low-life son of yours!
We MUST get out of the UN - NOW!!!
Hey Kofi, how's that ass-search goin'? Here's an idea: use both hands.
Where are the old guys in the balcony?
That's them! Thankyou.
"Even though the deadline has expired, I don't think the Council is going to act tomorrow."
Maybe in January after I, Coffey, can put my kaffiye back on, once I end my term. POS.
Ahmadinejad is laughing his butt off. And I'm laughing with him.
The UN won't be in for a quick response - they'll probably break for lunch before planning another meeting sometime next week. Kofi needs to talk to the guys in Iran in charge of bribing the UN before any *serious* resolutions are approached...
I'm surprised this idiot can find the bathroom. He and SchoolBus Nagin must have mastered in Procrastination. Probably never graduated since they never got around to writing their thesis.
Sounds like some IBM projects I've been on.
