I grew up in Oklahoma in the forties and fifties. And one of my fondest memories was watching a Rock Island 4-8-4 (
5100 series) bust through town at 70 mph with a mile of freight behind.
Awesome sight. And sound.

I had the privilege of seeing the UP Challenger 4-6-6-4 go through town four years ago. It was amazing to see big steam in action. It must have been an incredible time indeed.
On the side I just recently booked my tickets for a trip to Glacier National Park on Amtrak next year, so I can imagine I'll get a chance for some serious BNSF railfaning. Of course UP just made it illegal to photograph trains from the station platforms as a security measure against possible terrorist attack.
