The good folks who make up the religious right may not love the Republican party, but they know a threat when they see one. The modern Democratic party is hostile to their very existence. An embarrassment for the Deanified Democrats in the November mid-term elections would be a victory not for theocracy, but for enlightened self-interest.

Why is it ok for Democrats to campaign in black churches, or churches in general, but not ok for Republicans? why are churches supporting conservative positions on marriage or abortion, or other issues, threatened that they could lose tax exempt status?
Anyone with a normal faith threshold in my view would never vote democrat--the party of death.

It was not the most intelligent thing he could have said, given the current state of church-state relations in the US. Mr Dean tried to contain the damage by explaining that he was not pushing for challenges to the tax exemption of conservative churches. He was simply warning against giving congregation lists to political parties and other forms of prohibited political action by bodies of worship.

The Pubbies are no big thrill but if I need to I'll hold my nose and cast my vote against the Dem. However, the margin in my district is so large in favor of the incumbent that I can probably cast a meaningless third party vote if I am in the mood.

A guy we go to church with told us he was in Mass. a couple of weeks ago. He went to a church up there and he said it was completely political...against Bush, the war etc. How can lib churches get away with it but not Conserv. churches?
Why is secular 501c3 talk radio (NPR and Pacifica) permitted to engage unchallenged in endorsing candidates, parties, and legislation?
Political speech IS limited for 501c3 charities. It is the exchanged for a tax free status.
But opposing the policy of abortion does not compromise that status and cross overy into overt advocacy for/against a specific candidate, party, or piece of legislation.

I'm going against the grain here by saying "Church is nowhere to be preaching Politics".
